The Essence of Thiruppugal 994 Vedha Vithagaa (Pothuppaadalkal)

This Thiruppugazh, beginning with “Vedha Viththaga,” is a majestic hymn of pure adoration (Thuthi Padal) composed by Saint Arunagirinathar. Built upon the rhythmic and continuous chanting of the surrender mantra “Namo Nama” (Salutations), the song is a glorious tribute to Lord Murugan’s cosmic nature, His martial prowess, and deeply, the supreme grandeur of His mother, Goddess Parvati.

Here is a deep exploration of its profound meanings, structured under eight thematic headings:

1. The Master of Wisdom and the Formidable Warrior

The hymn opens by repeatedly surrendering to Lord Murugan, praising Him first as the ultimate master of the Vedas (Vedha Viththaga). He is not just a deity of peace but a fiercely powerful warrior (Maha Soora) who wields the mighty, victorious Vel (spear). Arunagirinathar salutes Him as the supreme commander who effortlessly devises and shatters complex, terrifying battle formations (Chakra Vyuha) to protect the righteous. This establishes Murugan as the perfect balance of absolute intellectual wisdom and unmatched martial valor.

2. The Primal Sound, Lotus Feet, and the Cosmic Peacock

Transitioning into His mystical attributes, the poet hails Lord Murugan as the origin of Bindu (cosmic light/matter) and Nada (primal sound). Salutations are offered to His heroic, beautiful lotus feet that grant salvation. Arunagirinathar paints a vivid picture of the Lord wearing garlands of vibrant blue Koothalam flowers. He is seated majestically on His divine peacock vehicle, which is so grand and dark that it resembles a massive, rain-bearing monsoon cloud (Mega moththa Mayura).

3. The Formless Supreme Consciousness

Moving beyond physical descriptions, the hymn dives into deep philosophical truths. Murugan is praised as the unspoken, highest form of Supreme Consciousness (Bodha). He transcends the limitations of the five physical elements (earth, water, fire, air, and space) that bind the mortal world. Arunagirinathar salutes Him as the one who dwells eternally in the state of absolute perfection and completeness (Pooranam). Here, the Lord is recognized as the infinite, formless, and all-pervading divine truth.

4. The Lord of High Mountains and Twelve Shoulders

Returning to His majestic physical manifestation, the poet offers salutations to the Lord who joyously resides in all the pure, towering mountain peaks (Bootharam). He is celebrated as the magnificent deity possessing twice-six, meaning twelve, long and powerful shoulders (Aaru Iratti Neel Thola). These twelve shoulders symbolize His boundless capability to protect the universe and perform endless acts of grace. His broad chest, beautifully adorned with precious, sparkling jewels, reflects His royal, divine sovereignty.

5. The Devotion of the Celestial Goddesses

At this point, the hymn introduces a beautiful structural shift, focusing on the divine mother, Goddess Parvati. To illustrate Her supreme status, Arunagirinathar describes the highest celestial goddesses in a state of continuous worship. Goddess Saraswati (seated on the white lotus), Goddess Lakshmi (seated on the red lotus), Indrani (the consort of Indra), and the fiercely valiant Saptamatrikas (the seven divine mothers) stand daily in profound devotion. All these powerful feminine deities bow down reverently to a singular, ultimate Supreme Mother.

6. The Grandeur of the Supreme Goddess

The object of their worship is beautifully described next. She is the master of all Vedas, the formidable one, and the one entirely detached from worldly illusions. She holds the majestic Veena in Her hands and resides gracefully on Mount Meru. She is the very essence of divine grace and shares the physical form of Lord Shiva (as Ardhanarishvara). Arunagirinathar glorifies Her as the absolute embodiment of pure, transcendent cosmic energy.

7. The Eternal Mother of the Universe

The praises of the Divine Mother reach their zenith as She is addressed by Her powerful names: Adhi Sakthi (the primordial energy), Syama, Maha Devi, and Parvati. She is the blue-hued goddess (Neeli), adorned with long, divine serpents as Her ornaments. She is the eternal mother of the universe (Nithyi) who wears a magnificent crown. It is to this ultimate, cosmic mother that all the celestial beings and goddesses bow down in total submission and reverence.

8. The Glorious Son and the Ultimate Savior

In the final stanza, the poet beautifully connects the glory of the Mother back to the Son. He offers infinite salutations to the excellent, virtuous son born to this supreme mother, Aryai (Parvati). Murugan is hailed as the widely celebrated hero who utterly destroyed the terrifying demon Surapadman. Arunagirinathar concludes the hymn by bowing to the Supreme Lord (Thambirane), who serves as the very life breath, savior, and ultimate refuge for the sages who chant the Vedas and follow the righteous path.

Summary

Thiruppugazh 994 is a magnificent hymn of surrender that repeatedly chants “Namo Nama” to glorify both Lord Murugan and His divine mother, Goddess Parvati. The first half of the song praises Murugan’s cosmic attributes—His mastery over the Vedas, His heroic twelve shoulders, His transcendent consciousness, and His majestic peacock. The hymn then beautifully pivots to describe the Supreme Mother, Parvati, highlighting how celestial goddesses like Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Indrani bow down to Her primordial power. It brilliantly concludes by saluting Lord Murugan as the glorious, victorious son of this supreme goddess, celebrating Him as the destroyer of evil and the ultimate savior of humanity.
