The Essence of Thiruppugazh 1048 Kuruthi Thōlināl (Pothuppādalgal)

This song is a powerful prayer seeking protection from the fear of death, while vividly describing the mythological exploits of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva to highlight Murugan’s supreme lineage.

1. The Hut of Blood and Skin

Arunagirinathar begins with a graphic description of the human body to shatter our attachment to it. He describes the body as a “Kudil” (Hut/Small cottage) constructed merely of “Kuruthi” (Blood) and “Thol” (Skin). Inside this fragile, decaying hut, the “Aavi” (Soul) resides, constantly suffering from various afflictions (Etham). The poet reminds us that this physical existence is temporary and fraught with misery.

2. The Terror of the God of Death

The poet envisions the inevitable end. He foresees the arrival of “Kalan” (The Messenger of Death/Yama). Yama does not come empty-handed; he comes armed with a “Kodiya Paasam” (Cruel Rope) to bind the soul and a “Soolam” (Trident) to attack. He unleashes “Kodumai Noi” (Cruel Diseases) that show no hesitation (Koosatha) in tormenting the body. Arunagirinathar prays to be saved before this terrifying army of death encircles him (Ethiramun).

3. The Protector of the Cosmos

Arunagirinathar shifts his focus to Murugan as the Savior. When the demon Surapadman terrorized the universe, the Sun (Paruthi), the Moon (Soman), the Devas (Vanadar), and the people of the Earth (Padiyulorgal) were trembling with fear. Murugan is the “Ilaiyone” (The Younger One/Kumara) who threw His Vel (Spear) to ensure that the entire cosmos, including the Milky Ocean (Palazhi), was freed from fear (Bayam uramal).

4. Shoulders Beyond Description

The glory of Murugan is so vast that even “Pazhuthuratha Pavannar” (Flawless Poets/Scholars) cannot fully describe it in writing. Specifically, His “Thol” (Shoulders) possess such valor and beauty that they are “Ezhuthonatha” (Indescribable/Unwritable). The poet humbly asks for “Arul” (Grace) to sing about Murugan’s holy feet with deep love and melting affection (Parivodu), acknowledging that human language is insufficient to capture His greatness.

5. The Feats of the Magic-Maker (Vishnu)

The song celebrates the lineage of Murugan’s uncle, Lord Vishnu.

  • The Marudha Trees: As baby Krishna, He was tied to a mortar. He crawled between two mystical Marudha trees, pulling the mortar until the trees crashed down and turned to dust (Neerathai Veezha), liberating the two cursed sons of Kubera.
  • Gajendra Moksha: When the elephant (Gajendra) was caught by a crocodile in a pond (Madu) and cried out “Adhimoolame,” Vishnu ran swiftly (Odi) to save him.
  • The Flute: He is the enchanter who plays the bamboo flute (Vey oothi).

6. The Obedient Son and Lover

Arunagirinathar continues to praise Vishnu (Murari/Gopala). He is the beloved husband/lover of the cowherd girls (Magalir Kelvan). Yet, despite his divinity, he was the obedient son who never transgressed the “Vachanam” (Words/Command) of his mother, Yasodha. Murugan is the “Marugone” (Nephew) of this great Lord Kesava, who possesses such power and simplicity.

7. The Ascetic on the Bull

Now, the lineage of the Father, Lord Shiva, is praised. Shiva is the “Gnana Aadhi” (The Primal Source of Wisdom) who cannot be grasped by mere thought (Karuthonatha). He is the “Kapali” (The One holding the Skull) who rides on a Bull (Eruthu). He dances in the cremation grounds with fierce ghouls (Kadiya Peyinodu Aadi). This depicts Shiva’s transcendence over death and societal norms.

8. The Fire that Consumed the Cities

Shiva is the warrior who intended (Naadi) to destroy his enemies (The Three Flying Cities – Tripura). He made them sink and perish in “Veng Kanal” (Fierce Fire) with just a smile/laughter. Murugan is the Son (Puthalva) of this Destroyer. Murugan is addressed as “Karana Atheetha” (Beyond Cause and Effect) and the “Meru of Compassion”. The poet surrenders to this Supreme Lord of the Devas.

Summary

In this Thiruppugazh, Arunagirinathar vividly paints the fear of death, describing the body as a hut of blood and skin and fearing the rope and trident of Yama. He contrasts this fear with the saving power of Murugan, who protects the Sun, Moon, and Devas. The song glorifies Murugan’s lineage: He is the Nephew of Vishnu (who toppled the Marudha trees and saved the elephant Gajendra) and the Son of Shiva (the Skull-bearer who rides a Bull and burnt the Three Cities). The poet prays for the grace to sing the praises of the Lord whose beauty is beyond the description of even the greatest poets.
