The Essence of Thiruppugazh 1309 Kaaranamadhaaga (Pazhamudircholai)

This Thiruppugal (Song 1309) is a profound prayer for spiritual liberation and a vision of the Divine. Arunagirinathar emphasizes that the purpose of human birth is to attain a state where death cannot touch the soul, seeking a direct experience of the wisdom that remains hidden even from the highest gods.

The Divine Purpose of Human Birth

The poet begins with the phrase “Karanamathaga vandhu puvi meedhe,” suggesting that our arrival on this earth is not accidental but purposeful. We have taken this birth to resolve our past karmas and to seek the ultimate truth. Arunagirinathar implies that the human form is a rare opportunity to bridge the gap between the material world and the eternal divine.

Seeking Immunity from Death

The poet expresses a deep desire for a state where “Kalan” (Yama, the God of Death) cannot approach. By asking to “attain the goal” (kadhi kaana) without the fear of mortality, he is not asking for physical immortality, but for Mukti—the liberation of the soul from the endless cycle of birth and death. When one is aligned with the Divine, the sting of death is removed.

The Mystery Hidden from the Trinity

Arunagirinathar highlights the supremacy of Lord Murugan by stating that He performs a dance of wisdom (Gnana Nadam) that was once invisible even to “Narana” (Vishnu) and “Vedhan” (Brahma). This refers to the Puranic context where even the Great Trinity struggled to grasp the full extent of the Absolute Truth, which Murugan reveals easily to his sincere devotees.

The Request for the Dance of Wisdom

The core plea of the song is “Gnana nadame purindhu varuvaye”—a request for the Lord to appear and perform His dance of supreme wisdom within the heart of the devotee. Just as Shiva performs the cosmic dance in Chidambaram, Murugan’s dance in the soul shatters the darkness of ego and ignorance, replacing it with the light of pure consciousness.

The Consort of the Celestial Nectar

The Lord is addressed as the husband of “Thanthi” (Devayanai), the daughter of Indra. She is described as being as sweet as “Aaramudham” (divine nectar). This relationship symbolizes Murugan’s Kriya Shakti (the power of action) and His role as the protector of the righteous celestial beings who represent the higher faculties of the mind.

The Twelve Eyes of Compassion

The poet invokes the iconic form of the Lord: “Arumugam aarirandu vizhiyone” (Six faces and twelve eyes). In Tamil devotional literature, these twelve eyes are considered twelve fountains of grace. Each eye looks in a different direction to ensure that no devotee, no matter where they are, is left without the Lord’s protective and compassionate gaze.

The Radiant Spear of Victory

The “Kathirvel” (the Spear as bright as sunbeams) is praised for having destroyed the “clans of the demons” (Soorar kilai maala). Metaphorically, these demons represent the internal enemies—lust, anger, and greed. The radiant Spear is the weapon of Jnana (wisdom) that pierces through the thickest layers of mental illusion to grant victory to the seeker.

The Sovereign of the Orchard Hill

The hymn concludes by identifying the Lord’s abode as “Solaimalai” (Pazhamudircholai), the hill of lush orchards. By addressing Him as “Perumaale” (the Great One), the poet acknowledges Him as the ultimate Sovereign who resides in nature’s beauty, waiting to bless those who climb the spiritual mountain to find Him.

Summary

This Thiruppugal is a heart-felt petition for spiritual enlightenment. The poet acknowledges that we have come to this earth for a divine purpose: to escape the clutches of death and the cycle of rebirth. He begs Lord Murugan to manifest the “Dance of Wisdom”—a supreme truth that remained a mystery even to Brahma and Vishnu. Praising the Lord as the consort of Devayanai, the six-faced protector with twelve compassionate eyes, and the wielder of the radiant Spear that destroyed all evil, Arunagirinathar surrenders to the Great Lord of Solaimalai, seeking the grace that leads to eternal liberation.
