The Essence of Thiruppugazh 1328 Eru Mayil Eri (Thiruvarunai)
Here is a deep and detailed explanation of Arunagirinathar’s highly celebrated Thiruppugal (Song 1328). This iconic hymn beautifully delineates the distinct divine functions and philosophical significance of each of Lord Murugan’s six faces (Arumugam), culminating in a plea for ultimate spiritual realization.
1. The Face of Divine Play and Omnipresence
The hymn begins by describing the first face of the Lord, which joyfully mounts and playfully rides the majestic peacock. This represents the Lord’s Leela (divine play) and His dynamic presence in the universe. The peacock, symbolizing the cosmos and the conquering of ego (often depicted holding a serpent), serves as the vehicle through which this face actively engages with the world, spreading joy, dynamism, and cosmic rhythm throughout creation.
2. The Face of Supreme Wisdom and the Universal Guru
The second face is celebrated as the ultimate source of spiritual knowledge. Arunagirinathar describes this face as speaking words of profound wisdom (Gnana) directly to Lord Shiva Himself. This refers to the legend of Swamimalai, where the young Murugan assumed the role of a Guru to teach the esoteric meaning of the Pranava Mantra (“Om”) to His father. This face symbolizes supreme cosmic intelligence and establishes Murugan as the ultimate preceptor of the universe.
3. The Face of Boundless Grace and Compassion
The third face is dedicated entirely to the welfare of the devotees. The poet states that this face lovingly gazes upon those who sing His praises and completely eradicates their accumulated karmic burdens (Vinai). This represents the Lord’s infinite mercy and His role as the ultimate savior. It assures seekers that absolute surrender and devotion will melt away the cycle of birth, death, and suffering.
4. The Face of Unshakable Valor and Clarity
The fourth face is depicted standing majestically, holding the sacred Spear (Vel) that pierced and shattered the Krauncha mountain. In spiritual symbolism, the Krauncha mountain represents dense, immovable human ignorance, arrogance, and the hardened ego. This face, wielding the Vel of knowledge, represents the focused, piercing clarity required to destroy profound spiritual ignorance and liberate the soul from illusion.
5. The Face of Fierce Justice and Annihilation of Evil
The fifth face represents the Lord’s martial wrath and commitment to cosmic order (Dharma). This face is described as the one that annihilated the hostile and treacherous demon king, Surapadman, along with his demonic forces. It embodies the fierce, uncompromising justice of the Divine, ensuring that dark, destructive forces are vanquished to protect the innocent and restore balance to the universe.
6. The Face of Divine Romance and Accessibility
The sixth face reveals the Lord’s profound accessibility and tender love. Arunagirinathar describes this face as the one that willingly descended to seek out and marry Valli, a humble maiden from the hunter tribe. This beautiful divine romance symbolizes Saulabhyam (the ease of access to the Divine). It illustrates that the Supreme Lord does not care for worldly status or rituals; He is captivated purely by unpretentious, innocent, and unwavering devotion.
7. The Esoteric Essence of the Six Faces
After detailing the specific attributes of each face—joy, wisdom, compassion, valor, justice, and love—the poet makes a profound philosophical plea. He asks the Lord to grant him the true understanding and realization of the ultimate meaning (Porul) behind these six faces. The six faces represent the entirety of the Divine’s interactions with the soul, and Arunagirinathar prays for the inner awakening required to comprehend this grand, multifaceted cosmic reality.
8. The Sovereign of Primordial Arunachala
In the concluding line, Arunagirinathar grounds this magnificent vision of the six-faced Lord in a specific sacred geography. He addresses Murugan as the Great Lord (Perumaale) who is eternally seated in the primordial, sacred hill of Arunachala (Thiruvannamalai). Arunachala is revered as the physical manifestation of Lord Shiva’s element of fire. By placing Murugan here, the poet honors Him as the radiant flame of wisdom residing in the most ancient center of spiritual liberation.
Summary
Thiruppugal 1328 is a masterclass in Saiva Siddhanta philosophy, beautifully encapsulating the diverse nature of the Divine through the six faces of Lord Murugan. The first face joyfully rides the cosmic peacock; the second imparts supreme wisdom to Lord Shiva; the third mercifully destroys the karmic burdens of devotees; the fourth heroically shatters the mountain of ego with the Vel; the fifth fiercely annihilates demonic forces; and the sixth descends with tender love to marry the humble devotee, Valli. Having vividly described these divine attributes—playfulness, wisdom, grace, clarity, justice, and love—Arunagirinathar begs for the spiritual insight to truly understand this six-fold cosmic mystery. He finally surrenders to this all-encompassing Great Lord who majestically presides over the primordial, fiery hill of Arunachala.
