The Essence of Tiruppukazh 736 Kaanoṇātatu (Tēvanūr)

This song is a masterpiece of Vedanta and Siddhanta philosophy. While many Thiruppugazh songs focus on the physical form of the Lord, this song begins by defining Murugan as the Formless Absolute (Brahman) that is beyond the senses, speech, and even the scriptures, before grounding Him in the local temple of Devanur.

1. The Paradox of Existence

The song opens with a series of mystical paradoxes. Arunagirinathar describes the Lord as “KanOnadhadhu”—That which cannot be seen by the physical eyes. He is both “Uruvu” (Form) and “Aruvu” (Formless). He is “Peso Nadhadhu”—That which cannot be spoken of or limited by language. Yet, He is the source that grants the power of speech (“Urai Tharuvadhu”). The poet asserts that Murugan is the “Conclusion” and “Fulfillment” (“Mudivay Niraivadhu”) of the Four Vedas, implying that all scriptures eventually point to this indefinable Truth.

2. The Stranger Within the Body

Arunagirinathar meditates on the relationship between the Soul and the Body. He states that the Lord resides within this “Pancha Bhuta Kaya”—the body made of the Five Elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Space). However, this presence is a mystery (“Mayamay”); the body does not realize that the Divine is dwelling within it (“Udal Ariya Vagai”). The Lord appears before the soul like a stranger or another human (“Manavar”), hiding His true cosmic nature to interact with us.

3. The Light in the Void

The poet continues to describe the transcendence of God. He is “Peno Nadhadhu”—He cannot be grasped merely by ritualistic worship or cherishing. He is the “Veliye Oliyadhu”—the Light that shines in the Great Void/Space of Consciousness. His nature is so subtle that even Vishnu (Mayanar) and the Creator Brahma (Ayan) cannot understand Him (“Ariya Vagai”). He grows and expands as the universe, manifesting as both “Difference” and “Non-Difference” (“Bedha Abedhamodu”).

4. Beyond the Fourth State (Turiya)

This verse is pure Yoga philosophy. Arunagirinathar identifies Murugan as the source of Vindhu (Primal Light) and Nada (Primal Sound). He describes the Lord as “Turiya Atheetham”—the state beyond Turiya. In Yoga, Turiya is the fourth state of consciousness (beyond waking, dreaming, and sleeping). Murugan is the Reality even beyond that. The poet prays to attain that singular state (“Ondru Neeye”) where his karma ends and Divine Grace fills him completely.

5. The Commander of Death

The song shifts from abstract philosophy to the fierce mythology of Murugan. The poet describes the war against the Asuras. Murugan did not just fight; He ordered Yama (the God of Death – Naman) to take their lives (“Uyir Nee Kol”). He threw the Vel to crush the demons who refused to yield. The poet addresses Him as the King who drank milk from the breast of Uma (Parvati), linking this destructive power to the nurturing power of the Mother Goddess.

6. The Knuckle-Knock on the Creator

Arunagirinathar recalls the famous episode where Murugan punished Brahma, the Creator. He describes Brahma as the “Four-faced Vedic Scholar” (“Vedha Nanmuka Maraiyon”). When Brahma failed to explain the meaning of the Pranava Mantra (OM), the child Murugan playfully (“Vilaiyadi”) knocked him on his tuft of hair/head (“Kudumiyile”) with His fist. This verse celebrates Murugan as the Brahma-Sastha—the one who punishes even the Creator for ignorance.

7. The Divine Thief of the Hills

The poet highlights the Lord’s romantic playfulness. He describes the scene in the Kurinji landscape (mountains). Murugan sought out Valli on the high loft (“Sen Onayidum”) used for guarding crops. He performed many “Leelas” (divine games) to confuse her with love (“Mayal Kola”). Arunagirinathar affectionately calls Him “Thiruda” (Thief)—the one who stole Valli’s heart. This contrasts sharply with the earlier verses: the Unknowable Light becomes a playful Thief for the sake of love.

8. The Resident of the Yogi’s Heart

The song concludes by defining the true “Temple” of the Lord. While He resides in the “SeroNa Vagai Veli” (The Unapproachable Space), He is firmly installed in the hearts (“Ulam”) of the “Jnana Yogis”—those who wander in truth. The poet affirms that this same Supreme Being, the Lord of the Celestials (“Amarargal Thambirane”), has come to reside in the town of Devanur as the young Kumara.

Summary

Thiruppugazh 736 is a journey from the Formless to the Form.

Arunagirinathar begins with high philosophy, defining Lord Murugan as the indescribable Reality that is beyond sight, speech, and the scriptures. He describes the Lord as the “Light in the Void” and the state beyond Turiya (consciousness), who hides within the human body unknown to the soul.

He then transitions to the Lord’s glorious deeds: punishing the Creator Brahma for ignorance, commanding Death to take the Asuras, and playing the role of a “Thief” to steal Valli’s heart. The song concludes that this Supreme Absolute, who dwells in the hearts of enlightened Yogis, is the deity residing at Devanur.
