The Essence of Thiruppugazh 757 Vaaruminge (Kadambur)
This song is a dramatic warning against the “Marketplace of Lust.” Arunagirinathar vividly reenacts the deceptive solicitations of public women and contrasts their “poisonous” affection with the “cool” sanctuary of the Lord’s feet.
1. The Poisonous Invitation
The song opens with the voice of temptation. Arunagirinathar portrays the women calling out from the streets: “Varum Inge” (“Come here!”). He describes this invitation as a “Veedi Thopanam”—a street-side decoration or a facade. He warns that falling for this attraction is like swallowing “Pashanam” (Arsenic/Poison). It is a “Madness of Debt” (Mal Kadan). Just as poison works silently to kill, this lust enters through the eyes and ears to kill the spirit, leaving the victim in a state of intoxicated ruin.
2. The Rehearsed Script
The poet exposes the artificial nature of this intimacy. He describes how these women command, “Vadi Pen… Payai Podu” (“Come girl, spread the mat”). They speak words that sound like “Asara Vasakam”—polite, traditional, or ritualistic phrases of welcome. However, Arunagirinathar notes that this is merely “Pol Kuri”—spoken like a simulation. It is a rehearsed script designed to make the victim feel special, while in reality, it is a mechanical process devoid of true emotion.
3. The Transactional Betrayal
Arunagirinathar reveals the cold economic reality behind the romance. Before the union even occurs (Serumun), the demands begin: they ask for “Kasu” (Cash), “Adai” (Clothes/Silk), and even “Vavi” (Property/Wells). If the victim’s contribution is deemed “Pothamai” (Insufficient), their demeanor instantly changes. They treat the man with “Theemai” (Evil/Scorn) and leave. The poet highlights that their affection is strictly measured by the weight of the gold given.
4. The Cool Sanctuary of the Feet
Having analyzed the trap, the poet prays for an escape route. He begs not to go to their “Seridam” (Gathering places) and not to get caught in their “Asu” (Defects/Traps). Instead, he asks for the “Seethalam Patharam”—the Cool, Lotus-like Feet of the Lord.
The contrast is deliberate: the world of lust is “Hot” (poison, anxiety, demand), while the world of Murugan is “Cool” (peace, grace, stability). He seeks the refuge that calms the burning of the senses.
5. The Nephew of the Discus-Bearer
The song shifts to the majestic lineage of Murugan. Arunagirinathar lists the names of Lord Vishnu: Narayanan, Sri Rama, and Kesava. He specifically describes Vishnu as the “Koor Azhi Nayakan”—the Lord of the Sharp Discus (Sudarshana Chakra). Murugan is addressed as the “Marukone” (Nephew) of this powerful Protector who resides on the Ocean of Milk and holds the lotus-born Brahma (Puvayan) in his navel. This invokes the protective energy of Vishnu to guard the devotee.
6. The Audience of the Cosmic Dance
Arunagirinathar paints a scene of celestial art. He mentions Narada (Narathum) playing the “Pur Geetham” (Ancient/City Songs) on his Veena with great joy (Modha). To this divine music, Lord Shiva performs a “Nadakam” (Dance/Drama).
Murugan is described as the “Arul Bala” (Child of Grace) of this Cosmic Dancer. This verse suggests that true beauty lies in the arts of the Divine (Narada’s music, Shiva’s dance), not in the deceptive arts of the street women mentioned in the beginning.
7. Restarting the Sun’s Chariot
The poet recounts the victory over Surapadman. The demon had become so powerful that he disrupted the cosmic order. Murugan threw his “Ayil” (Spear) so that the demon and his ocean fortress (Godhazhi) withered and died (Devada). A significant consequence of this victory was that “Suriyan Ther Oda”—the Chariot of the Sun could run freely again. The demon had previously imprisoned the planets; Murugan’s victory liberated Time and Light itself.
8. The Confluence at Kadambur
The song concludes at the shrine of Kadambur. Arunagirinathar describes the hydrology of the region: the “Thu Narum Kaveri” (Pure, Fragrant Kaveri River) joins with the “On Seer Aru” (The bright, famous tributary river—likely the Manimuktha/Vellaru). The town of Kadambur is surrounded by this fertile water. He surrenders to the Perumale (Great Lord) of this town, asking the Lord who stands where the rivers meet to let the poet meet His holy feet.
Summary
Thiruppugazh 757 is a prayer for Coolness amidst the Heat of Lust.
Arunagirinathar warns the mind against the “poisonous decoration” of lust, describing how worldly attraction is a scripted drama where affection turns to scorn the moment money runs out. He yearns to escape this “hot” trap and find refuge in the “Cool Lotus Feet” of the Lord.
He praises Lord Murugan as the nephew of Lord Rama/Vishnu (the wielder of the Discus) and the son of Shiva (who dances to Narada’s music). He celebrates the Lord as the Liberator of the Sun’s chariot and surrenders to Him at Kadambur, where the sacred Kaveri river flows, asking for the flow of grace to wash away his impurities.
