The Essence of Thiruppugazh 760 Kazhaimuththu malai (Sri Mushtam)

This song is famous for its opening verse, which is a glittering display of ancient Tamil knowledge regarding natural gems. Arunagirinathar adorns Lord Murugan with rare types of pearls described in Sangam literature, creating a visual masterpiece before moving into the Lord’s lineage and valor.

1. The Garland of Rare Pearls

The song begins with a stunning catalogue of jewelry. In ancient Indian tradition, pearls (Muthu) were believed to originate not just from oysters, but from various high-energy sources in nature. Arunagirinathar lists them all, visualizing Murugan wearing garlands made of:

  • Kazhai Muthu: Pearls found inside the joints of mature Bamboo/Sugarcane.
  • Puyal Muthu: Pearls believed to be formed in rain clouds (a poetic concept of crystallized rain).
  • Kari Muthu: The Gajamuthu—pearls found inside the forehead of majestic elephants.
  • Malai Muthu: Pearls found in the tusks of wild boars in the mountains. The poet envisions the Lord’s chest completely covered by these strands, swaying beautifully as He moves.

2. The Gem from the Serpent’s Hood

Arunagirinathar continues the list of rare ornamentation. He mentions the “Valai Muthu” (Pearls from Conch shells), the “Kadal Muthu” (Standard pearls from the sea oysters), and most notably, the “Aravu Eenum Azhal Muthu.” This refers to the Nagamani—the Cobra Pearl. Legend states that ancient cobras spit out a glowing gem to provide light for themselves.

The poet describes this gem as “Fiery” (Azhal). He asks Murugan to appear with these garlands swinging rhythmically on His chest.

3. The Rider of the Green Horse

The poet asks for a specific vision (Darshan). He wants the Lord to appear “Adiyen Mun” (Right before me, the humble servant). He asks Murugan to come riding on the “Pachchai Ma”—literally the “Green Horse.” In the context of Murugan, this refers to the Peacock, which is often described in Tamil poetry as a green steed due to its vibrant plumage. This establishes the classic image of the Mayil Vahanan (The Peacock Rider).

4. The Entourage of Grace

Arunagirinathar does not want to see Murugan alone. He asks the Lord to come “Arulil Penodum”—with the “Lady of Grace.” This refers to His consorts, Valli and Deivanai, who represent the Lord’s power of Will (Iccha) and Action (Kriya). Furthermore, the poet asks to see the “Adimai Kuzham”—the group of slaves/devotees. This highlights a profound truth: the beauty of God is enhanced when He is surrounded by those who love Him.

5. The Mother with the Sweet Voice

The song shifts to Murugan’s lineage. The poet praises Goddess Parvati (Shakti). He describes Her as “Mazhaiyoththa Jothi”—a Light that is as cool and benevolent as the Rain. He describes Her voice as being as sweet as the Kuyil (Cuckoo) and the Thaththai (Parrot). She is the “Ayee” (Mother) who gave birth to Murugan (Eemai Eenu). This verse emphasizes the gentle, maternal aspect of the Divine.

6. The Blue-Throated Dancer

Arunagirinathar describes the Father, Lord Shiva. He calls Him “Nitha Nathar” (The Eternal Lord). He is described as “Madha Maththa”—intoxicated with divine bliss (or adorned with Datura flowers). He has the “Neela Kalam”—the Blue Throat resulting from consuming the Halahala poison to save the universe.

Murugan is the son who brings “Magizh” (Joy) to this powerful Shakti and Shiva.

7. The Bridegroom of the Pearl-Breasted One

The poet focuses on Murugan’s relationship with Deivanai (the daughter of Indra). He describes her as “Amudha Deivanai”—sweet as nectar. She is described as having a chest adorned with “Sezhu Muthu” (Lush/Rich Pearls). Murugan is the “Manavala” (Bridegroom) of this celestial beauty and also the Lord of the “Lady of Liberation” (Thiru Muthi Madhu), linking worldly prosperity with spiritual liberation.

8. The Liberator of Srimushnam

The song concludes at the shrine of Thiru Muttam (Srimushnam). This town is famous for the Varaha Avatar (Boar Incarnation) of Vishnu, but Arunagirinathar sings of the Murugan shrine there. He addresses the Lord as the one who “Sirai Itta Surar Thalai Vetti”—He who cut off the shackles of the Devas who were imprisoned by the demons. He resides in this town of “Gnana Thiru Muttam” (The Holy Srimushnam of Wisdom), implying that worshipping here breaks the shackles of our own karma.

Summary

Thiruppugazh 760 is a visual feast celebrating Rare Ornamentation and Divine Lineage.

Arunagirinathar begins by describing Lord Murugan adorned with the “Seven Types of Ancient Pearls”—from bamboo, rain clouds, elephants, mountains, conch, sea, and cobras. He begs the Lord to appear before him wearing these garlands, riding the Green Peacock, and accompanied by His consorts and devotees.

He praises Murugan’s parents—the sweet-voiced Parvati and the blue-throated Shiva—and celebrates Murugan as the liberator who shattered the chains of the Devas. He surrenders to this Lord of Wisdom residing at Srimushnam, asking to be freed from his own bondage.
