The Essence of Tiruppukaḻ 763 vaṇṭu aṇiyum (Tirumayēntiram)
The song is set in Thirumayendhiram (associated with the Mahendra Malai region or a shrine embodying that concept).
1. The Intoxicating Allure of Beauty
Arunagirinathar begins by describing the overwhelming sensory trap of worldly attraction. He speaks of women whose hair is so fragrant and flower-adorned that swarms of bees (vandu) buzz around it, mistaking it for a garden. Their eyes are compared to sharp arrows, and their foreheads are shaped like the crescent or a bow, possessing a lethal beauty. Their teeth are described as being aligned like radiant pearls (aralam). The poet sets the scene by illustrating how easily the human mind is ensnared by external aesthetics—the voice sweet like a cuckoo and the mesmerizing physical form.
2. The Bondage of Sensory Pleasure
The verses continue to elaborate on the physical captivation. The poet describes the women as having chests that resemble mountain peaks, decorated with pearls and ornaments (angu mizh). Their waists are so slender that they are compared to a thin vine (vanji) or a thread, creating a sense of fragility that contrasts with the heavy burden of lust they inspire in men. This section highlights the “golden” illusion (madavar pon)—the way physical attraction creates a shining, golden mirage that hides the reality of spiritual decay.
3. The Deception of Flattery
Here, the poet exposes the manipulative nature of relationships based solely on wealth and lust. When the protagonist has money to offer, these companions act with excessive joy (kali koornthu). They engage in sweet, whispery conversations, singing alluring tunes and dancing with calculated movements (sathikarar) to entrap the mind. Their eyes roll and dart playfully to captivate the victim. This paragraph underscores the artificiality of their affection, which is a performance designed to extract wealth rather than a genuine connection.
4. The Bitter Sting of Rejection
Arunagirinathar paints a heartbreaking picture of what happens when the wealth runs dry. The very same companions who offered sweet words now become “sinners” (pavigal) who treat the impoverished lover like poison. They toss his old shirt or walking stick at him and callously tell him to “get lost.” The poet laments his own state, comparing himself to a helpless object caught in a flood (kampai), wasting his life away in this cycle of humiliation and illusion. He asks the Lord, “Is this my fate? To suffer and perish in this river of ignorance?”
5. The Refuge of the Devas and Sages
The tone of the song shifts dramatically from despair to hope. The poet turns his gaze toward Lord Murugan. He describes how the Celestials (Andar) and great ascetics (Madhavar), who have performed immense penance, gather around the Lord. They cry out, “Oh King!” seeking his protection. Murugan is the one who steps forward to give the assurance of “Anjel” (Do not fear). He is the hero who marched forth to destroy the ten-headed Ravana (in his avatar as Rama/Vishnu’s nephew) and the Asura clans, offering a sanctuary to the righteous.
6. The Cataclysmic Power of the Vel
This section describes the terrifying and majestic power of Murugan’s weapon, the Vel. When released, the Vel causes the oceans to shrink and dry up. It crushes the massive Kraken/Asura hills (En giri) into mere dust and ash. The power is so intense that even Yama, the God of Death (Anthakan), is terrified; he throws down his rope of death and flees. The Vel is the ultimate dispeller of fear and the destroyer of karma, liberating the soul from the cycle of birth and death described in the earlier verses.
7. The Lineage of Lord Shiva
The poet addresses Murugan as the son of Lord Shiva. He offers a vivid description of Shiva: the One who wears the river Ganga and the crescent moon on His matted locks (sadai), who wears a serpent as an ornament, and who is smeared with sacred ash (thiru neeru) from the cremation grounds. Murugan is the “Senchudar” (the Red Flame) born of this Great God. This highlights Murugan’s inheritance of cosmic power and his identity as the essence of wisdom and fire.
8. The Lord of Thirumayendhiram
In the concluding lines, Arunagirinathar visualizes the specific form of the Lord residing at Thirumayendhiram. He describes Murugan as having a chest fragrant with sandalwood paste, resembling the coolness of the moon. This Lord has entered the poet’s heart, driving away the earlier lust and confusion. He is seated happily with his consort (Valli/Deivanai), described as a deer (Maan). The song ends with a surrender to this Great One (Perumale) who dwells in the heart of the devotee, replacing the chaos of the world with divine bliss.
Summary
The song “Vandu Aniyum” is a journey from the darkness of ignorance to the light of wisdom. It begins by warning the listener about the treacherous nature of lust and transactional relationships, where affection is feigned for money and results in humiliation.
Midway through, Arunagirinathar breaks free from this misery by invoking Lord Murugan. He glorifies the Lord’s valor, the destructive power of His Vel against evil and death, and His lineage as the son of Shiva. The song concludes with the peaceful image of Murugan residing in Thirumayendhiram, having taken residence in the poet’s heart to grant eternal bliss.
