The Essence of Thiruppugazh 40 kamalamAdhudan (thiruchchendhUr)

This song is unique because it contains a powerful “Namavali” (List of Names) of the Divine Mother, Shakti. Arunagirinathar starts by rejecting the false beauty of worldly women and ends by praising the true beauty of the Divine Mother and her two sons, Ganesha and Murugan.

1. The Illusion of Divine Comparison

Arunagirinathar begins by describing how men get deluded by women. They praise these women by comparing them to Lakshmi (Kamala Mathu) and Indrani (Indirai). The poet notes that men become trapped in the embrace (Angai) and the chest coated with cool sandalwood paste (Santhana Kalapa). He highlights the irony: men attribute divine qualities (like those of Lakshmi) to ordinary mortals who are merely vessels of physical pleasure, thereby setting themselves up for disappointment.

2. The Science of Deception

The poet uses a strong phrase: “Kalavu Nool Theri Vanjanai.”

  • Kalavu Nool means “The Book of Theft” or the art of stealing hearts.
  • Vanjanai means Deceit. He describes the attraction as a calculated trick. The eyes lined with collyrium (Anjana Vizhi) and the dark, fragrant hair (Kariya Othi) act as “Mohitha” (Mesmerizing agents). Arunagirinathar pleads with his mind: “Do not get confused (Marulathe) by looking at these moon-like faces (Indhu Mugam), for it is all a play of deception.”

3. The Path of the Pure Mind

Arunagirinathar prescribes the cure for this delusion. He seeks a state where the mind becomes “Amala” (Pure/Blemish-less). He speaks of the four goals of life, specifically Aram (Dharma), Porul (Wealth), and Inbam (Pleasure). He implies that one must understand these correctly through scripture (Othu), realize their transient nature (Unarnthu), and then “Cool Down” (Thanantha Pin). This “cooling” refers to the subsidence of the burning desires of the mind, leaving room for Grace (Arul).

4. The Rhythmic Anklets of Grace

Once the mind is cooled and pure, the poet asks for the ultimate prize: The Holy Feet of Murugan. He describes the feet adorned with Silambu (Anklets) and Kinkini (Small bells made of Red Gold – Aruna Adaka). He longs to hear the “Iniya Natha” (Sweet Sound) of these ornaments. This sound is the Omkara, the divine vibration that replaces the confusing noise of the world.

5. The Litany of the Divine Mother (Shakti)

This verse is a spectacular invocation of the Goddess. Arunagirinathar recites twelve powerful names of the Mother:

  • Kumari: The Virgin / The Eternally Young.
  • Kali: The Fierce Destroyer of Time/Evil.
  • Payangari: The Terrifying One (to demons).
  • Sankari: The Consort of Sankara (Shiva).
  • Gowri: The Fair/Golden One.
  • Neeli: The Blue-hued One.
  • Paramparai: The Supreme Eternal Lineage.
  • Ambikai: The Mother.
  • Kudilai: The Curved One (Pranava/Om).
  • Yogini: The Master of Yoga.
  • Chandini: The Fierce One.
  • Kundali: The Kundalini Shakti residing in the body. He acknowledges her as “Emathu Ayi” (My Mother).

6. The Mother of the Universe

The praise of the Goddess continues. She is “Kuraivilal” (The One without defects/The Full One). She is Uma and Sundari (The Beautiful One). Arunagirinathar identifies Murugan as the son given by this multifaceted Supreme Shakti (Thantharu Kumara). By listing her terrifying forms (Kali) alongside her gentle forms (Sundari), the poet acknowledges that the energy that creates, sustains, and destroys is one and the same—and Murugan is the embodiment of that energy’s grace.

7. The Younger Brother of the Elephant Lord

Arunagirinathar dedicates a verse to Lord Ganesha. He addresses him as “Mama Vinayagan” (My Vinayaga). He describes Ganesha as:

  1. Mushika Munthiya: The one who drives/rides the Mouse.
  2. Aingara: The Five-Handed One.
  3. Gajanana: The Elephant-Faced One. He mentions that Ganesha is the delight of Lord Shiva (Mavuli), who wears the Crescent Moon (Ambuli) and the snake (Nanjumizh Kanjuki). Murugan is introduced as “Ilaiyone”—the Younger Brother of this great Ganesha, sharing the same divine heritage.

8. The Auspicious City of Tiruchendur

The song concludes with the signature description of Tiruchendur. It is described as a land of immense fertility where Vazhai (Banana), Manjal (Turmeric), and Inji (Ginger) grow densely without any gaps (Idaividathu Nerungiya). The city is called “Mangala Makimai Ma Nagar”—The Great City of Auspicious Glory. The fertility of the land serves as a metaphor for the spiritual fertility one gains by worshipping Murugan there.

Summary

“Kamalamadhudan” is a song of Transition from Falsehood to Truth. Arunagirinathar begins by warning us against the “Book of Theft” (Kalavu Nool)—the deceptive attraction of worldly romance. He contrasts this with the “Pure Mind” (Amala Sinthai) required for spiritual progress. The centerpiece of the song is the majestic list of names of the Divine Mother (Kali, Kundalini, Ambikai), establishing that Murugan is the essence of this Supreme Shakti. The song ends by invoking the protection of Ganesha and the auspiciousness of the fertile Tiruchendur.
