The Essence of Thiruppugazh 49 kuzhaikkumsanthana (thiruchchendhUr)
This song is a study in “Colour and Texture.” Arunagirinathar uses the colour Red repeatedly—the red Kumkum of the women, the red rising Sun of the Lord’s feet, and the red-gold hair of Shiva. He contrasts the “Paste” that traps the body with the “Light” that liberates the soul.
1. The Mountain of Pastes
Arunagirinathar begins by describing the heavy cosmetic ornamentation used to incite lust. He mentions “Santhanam” (Sandalwood paste) mixed with “Cheng Kumkumam” (Red Vermilion). This paste is smeared so thickly that the chest of the woman resembles a “Santhana Kundram”—a hillock of sandalwood. The poet points out that the mind gets stuck in this fragrant, colorful paste, mistaking the decoration for reality.
2. The Enchantresses (Singiyar)
The poet uses a specific term to describe these women: “Singiyar.”
-
Singi can refer to a woman of a specific tribe, but here it implies an “Enchantress” or “One who is like poison/alchemy.” He describes their eyes as “Kayal” (Carp fish) that are constantly moving, blinking, and “calling” (Azhaikkum). These eyes are not passive; they are active agents that “speak” and entrap the devotee. The poet laments being caught by the “music” or “prattle” (Pan) of these enchantresses.
3. Fattening the Fleshy Mass
Arunagirinathar critiques the hedonistic lifestyle. He describes the process of “Sukithu Undu”—eating rich food and enjoying sensory pleasures. The result of this is that the “Udal Pindam” (The mass of the body/The corpse-to-be) becomes “Paruthu” (Fat/Swollen). He realizes that he is working hard (Uzhaikkum) only to fatten a body that is destined to perish, while his soul remains starved. He asks, “Must I continue to roll (Kuzhalathe) in this mire?”
4. The Feet Resembling the Rising Sun
The antidote to the red Kumkum of the women is the Red Feet of the Lord. Arunagirinathar asks for the Holy Feet that shine with the brilliance of the “Uthikkum Cheng Kathir”—the Rising Red Sun.
-
Imagery: The rising sun dispels darkness; similarly, the glowing feet of Murugan dispel the darkness of lust. He asks to be joined (Seray) to these feet, which are adorned with “Kinkini” (small bells) and painted with “Sem Panju” (Red Cotton dye).
5. The Son of the Golden-Haired Shiva
The song shifts to the divine lineage. Arunagirinathar describes Lord Shiva as the one wearing the “Konrai” (Golden Cassia) flowers. His hair is described as “Sempon Sadai” (Matted locks of Red Gold). This emphasizes the radiant, fiery nature of Shiva. Murugan is introduced as the son of this “Perumanar” (Great Lord), implying that He inherits this golden, radiant nature.
6. The Great Life of Parvati
Arunagirinathar describes the relationship between Murugan and His mother. Parvati is described as “Sankari” (Consort of Sankara) and “Semparai” (The Red Goddess/Shakti) who shares the body of Shiva (Thani Pangin Purathin). The poet calls Murugan “Peru Vazhvu”—The Great Life or The Great Treasure of the Mother. This suggests that Murugan is the very life-breath and joy of the Supreme Goddess.
7. The Consort of the Deer-Like Valli
The poet describes the romantic nature of Murugan. He mentions “Kazhai” (Bamboo/Sugarcane) and “Kulai” (Stag/Deer), invoking the forest setting of Valli. Murugan is described as the “Thin Puya Vel”—The Lord with Strong Shoulders who bestows grace (Panbu Alikkum) upon the fish-eyed Valli. The strength of His shoulders is meant to protect the devotee, just as it protected Valli.
8. The Cloud-Capped Tiruchendur
The song concludes with a dramatic description of the seashore. Arunagirinathar describes “Karukkum Kondal”—dark, rain-bearing clouds gathering over Tiruchendur. The ocean surges (Pongum) and throws up “Sangu” (Conch shells) onto the shore. In this majestic setting, Murugan resides with “Anbu” (Love). The poet surrenders to this Perumale, asking to be anchored in the love of Tiruchendur rather than the lust of the world.
Summary
“Kuzhaikkumsanthana” is a song of Redemption through Radiance. Arunagirinathar contrasts the “Red Paste” (Kumkumam) of worldly women, which leads to the fattening of the perishable body, with the “Red Sun” (Cheng Kathir) of Murugan’s feet, which leads to liberation. He realizes that he has been working hard only to feed a “fleshy mass” (Pindam). He prays to the Lord—the Treasure of Parvati and the Protector of Valli—to save him from this futile existence and grant him the shelter of His sun-like feet at the cloud-covered shores of Tiruchendur.
