The Essence of Thiruppugazh 73 niRukkunjchUdhana (thiruchchendhUr)

This song is a vivid cautionary tale. Arunagirinathar exposes the “Manufactured Nature of Lust,” describing how worldly attraction is often a carefully constructed product designed to entrap the mind. He contrasts this false, sticky sweetness with the sharp, liberating power of Murugan’s Vel.

1. The Sugarcane-Rice Trap

Arunagirinathar begins with a unique and somewhat graphic metaphor for the physical body. He describes the breasts of courtesans as “Soodhana Meythana Undaigal”—balls of cooked food/flesh that are carefully prepared. He compares them to a mixture of rice flour and “Karuppan Charu” (Sugarcane juice). Just as a sweetmeat is shaped, dried in the shade (Nizhal Kan Kana), and perfumed to look appetizing, the poet argues that physical beauty is a manufactured illusion. It is “cooked up” and decorated to look sweet, but it is ultimately perishable matter designed to entrap the senses.

2. The Bedside Manipulation

The poet moves from the physical appearance to the psychological game. He depicts a scene in the bedroom (Payal). The woman, while chewing betel leaves (Vetrilai), hides her lack of true love (Olithu Anbu) and engages in “Alithu Abinayam”—false acting. She complains to the man, “You don’t think of me enough; you don’t praise me enough!” (Mecchal Idham Soli). Arunagirinathar exposes this as a transactional script used to manipulate the man’s ego and extract more wealth, rather than genuine affection.

3. The Net of the “Pottigal”

Arunagirinathar uses harsh language to describe these temptresses. He calls them “Pavigal” (Sinners) and “Pottigal” (Deceitful women/Whores). He realizes that their intent is to catch men in the “Aasai Valai” (Net of Desire). He laments that his mind melts (Urukku) and wanders (Uzhala) in their “Settai” (Mischief/Evil conduct). He questions why he should waste his life entangled in this “net” of manufactured love when he knows it is a lie.

4. The Imperishable Six Letters

To counter the “Manufactured Trap” of the first verse, the poet prays for the “Eternal Truth.” He refers to the “Ulappil Aru Enum Akkaram”—The Imperishable Six Letters (Sa-Ra-Va-Na-Bha-Va). He asks for the grace to meditate on these letters constantly. He wants to visualize the “Kadappa Thar” (Garland of Kadamba flowers) and the radiant face of the Lord (Muka Prabai) within the “vision of his heart” (Ulathin Parvai). He seeks to replace the image of the woman with the image of the Lord.

5. The Nephew of the Bow-Wielder

The song shifts to the lineage of Murugan. Arunagirinathar praises Lord Vishnu (Rama/Krishna). He describes Vishnu as the one who holds the “Karukkum Tuyam Idaru Silai”—the bow that destroys enemies/obstacles. He mentions Vishnu’s strong shoulders that broke the tusks of the elephant (Kari) and killed the Danavas (Demons). Murugan is addressed as the “Marukone” (Nephew) of this mighty warrior. This verse reminds the devotee that Murugan shares the genetic code of the Supreme Protector.

6. The Map of Grace

Arunagirinathar lists several holy places associated with Murugan, showing his travel and devotion. He mentions:

  1. Thanjapuri: Thanjavur.
  2. Sikkal: The place where Murugan received the Vel.
  3. Valamchuzhi: Swami Malai (or a nearby shrine).
  4. Tiruchengode: The hill temple.
  5. Idaikazhi: The shrine of the Sangam poets.
  6. Kurukkai & Purampayam: Ancient shrines. By listing these places, the poet emphasizes that the Lord is omnipresent across the Tamil land, residing wherever there is sanctity.

7. The Army of the Lawless

The poet describes the massive scale of the enemy forces. He details the army of Surapadman:

  • Sirukkan Kurma: Elephants with small, angry eyes.
  • Sainthavam: Horses (from the Sindhu region).
  • Ther: Chariots. Surapadman is described as “Pathakan” (Sinner), “Akraman” (Lawless/Unjust), and the embodiment of “Vanjanai” (Deceit). This description serves to highlight the magnitude of the “Evil Ego” that threatens the soul.

8. The Life-Drinking Vel

The song concludes with the ultimate victory. Arunagirinathar describes the Vel (Spear) as “Kuriya Saththi”—the Sharp Shakti. This Vel does not merely wound; it “Uyir Kudikkum”—it drinks the life force of the arrogant demon (Serukkum Sur). It digs into his chest (Agalathai Idanthu) and destroys him completely. The poet surrenders to this powerful Lord who resides in Tiruchendur, the battlefield where this “Life-Drinking Vel” reigns supreme.

Summary

“NiRukkunjchUdhana” is a song of Exposure and Excision. Arunagirinathar exposes the “sugary trap” of lust, describing it as a manufactured product (“cooked balls of rice and sugar”) and a psychological scam performed by deceitful women (Pottigal). To escape this sticky web, he prays to meditate on the “Imperishable Six Letters” (Saravanabhava). The song culminates in a display of martial power, listing the holy temples of the Chola region and describing Murugan’s Sharp Spear (Saththi) that “drinks the life” of the lawless demon Surapadman at Tiruchendur.
