The Essence of Thiruppugazh 91 mundhuthamizhmAlai (thiruchchendhUr)

This song is famous for its rhythmic suffix “-kaara” (meaning “Doer,” “Owner,” or “Possessor”). It is a song of Rights and Claims. Arunagirinathar claims his right to be ruled by the Lord, and in turn, lists the many titles and roles that Murugan owns—from the Protector of the Vedas to the Servant of Valli.

1. The Infinite Loop of Sycophancy

Arunagirinathar begins by describing the pathetic state of a poet who sells his art for survival. He says he has composed “Kodik Kodi” (Crores and Crores) of “Mundhu Tamil Malai” (Ancient/First-class Tamil garlands of verse). He has sung them with perfect “Sandham” (Rhythm/Meter). Yet, he has wasted this talent by “Thedi Thedi” (Searching and Searching) for the “Munjar Manai Vasal”—the doorsteps of useless, miserly men (or men with elephant-like thick skin). He prays to stop this wandering (Uzhalathe), realizing that using divine poetry to beg from mortals is a spiritual tragedy.

2. The Dismissal of Momentum

The poet asks for a complete severance from his past. He prays for “Mundhai Vinai” (The Karma accumulated in the past) to leave him without “Evaramal” (pushing or inciting him further). Specifically, he asks for the “Kadhal” (Lust/Infatuation) for women to go “Dhurathu Ega” (Far away). To achieve this, he asks Murugan to come to the “Munai Meethu” (The Forefront/The Sharp Edge) and “Rule” (Aala) over him. He acknowledges that he is a slave (Adimai), but he demands that the Master take active control to stop the momentum of past karma.

3. The Rhythm of the Red Feet

The song shifts from the poet’s sorrow to the Lord’s dance. Arunagirinathar uses “Sollukattu” (Rhythmic Syllables) like “Dhindhidhimi… Thodhi… Theedhi…” to mimic the sound of the dance. He describes the Peacock dancing to the “Chegu Thalam” (The strong/wooden beat). He zooms in on the peacock’s anatomy, describing its “Chen siriya Kal” (Red, small feet). The imagery is vivid: the massive, cosmic dance is supported by the delicate, beautiful red feet of the divine bird.

4. The Arrival on the Golden Vehicle

Arunagirinathar asks for a specific vision. He describes the peacock as having a “Visala Thogai”—a Broad, expansive plumage. He addresses the bird as “Sempon Mayil” (Golden Peacock). He asks Murugan to come “Ippodhu” (Right Now) on this vehicle. The request is urgent. He wants the “Thunga Anukula Parvai”—the Pure, Graceful, Benevolent Gaze—to fall upon him immediately to cure the distress mentioned in the first verse.

5. The Guardian of the Two Traditions

This verse begins the famous “Kaara” section. Arunagirinathar identifies Murugan as the bridge between Sanskrit and Tamil.

  • Andhan Marai Velvi Kaval Kara: The Protector (Kaval Kara) of the Vedic Sacrifices (Velvi) performed by Brahmins (Andhanar).
  • Senthamizh Sol Pavin Malai Kara: The Wearer/Owner (Malai Kara) of the garlands of Pure Tamil verse. He is also the “Andar Upakara”—The Benefactor who helps the Devas. This verse establishes Murugan as the synthesis of Vedic ritual and Tamil devotion.

6. The Shape-Shifting Warrior

The poet continues to list Murugan’s attributes.

  • Anjali Seyvorgal Neya Kara: The Lover (Neya Kara) of those who perform “Anjali” (folding hands in prayer).
  • Velai Kara: The Wielder of the Vel that pierced the mountain (Kundru Uruva).
  • Rupa Kara: The Possessor of many forms. He is “Andham Veguana”—Beautiful and Many-formed. Arunagirinathar highlights that the Lord is terrifying to the mountain (enemies) but loving to those who simply fold their hands.

7. The Master Who Became a Servant

This is the most poetic theological paradox in the song.

  • Bhoga Kara: To Deivayanai (daughter of the Elephant/Indra), He is the “Enjoyer” or Husband.
  • Velai Kara: To Valli (Vindhai Kura Madhu – The Wonder Girl of the Hunters), He is a “Servant” (Velai Kara). The Supreme Lord, who protects the Vedas, willingly became a servant to perform chores for the hunter girl Valli out of love. This shows that while He commands the Devas, He serves His devotees.

8. The Magician of Tiruchendur

The song concludes with the victory at Tiruchendur.

  • Maya Kara: The Magician. He made the “Red Battle” (Sen Samar) disappear (Mayum).
  • Surai Kara: The Looter/Destroyer. He looted the pride of Surapadman (Sura).
  • Manmai Kara: The Possessor of Manliness/Majesty. He is the Perumale (Great One) who lives in Sendhi Nagar (Tiruchendur). The poet takes refuge in this “Manly Magician” who can destroy the demons of the external world and the karma of the internal world.

Summary

“Mundhuthamizhmalai” is a song of Divine Authority. Arunagirinathar begins by lamenting his wasted life, composing millions of songs for miserly humans. He begs Murugan to take ownership of him to stop the momentum of his past karma and lust. The song then explodes into the rhythm of the peacock’s dance (Dhindhidhimi). It famously lists Murugan’s titles ending in “-kara”: He is the Protector of Vedic rituals, the Wearer of Tamil garlands, the Lover of simple prayer, and the “Servant” of the hunter girl Valli. The song glorifies the Lord of Tiruchendur as the ultimate “Magician” and “Warrior” who destroys evil and protects the righteous.
