The Essence of Thiruppugazh 22 andhaganvarundhinam (thiruchchendhUr)

This song is widely regarded as a “Sadhana” (Spiritual Practice) song. It contains the essence of Raja Yoga and Gnana Yoga. The first half describes the process of attaining the highest state of silence (Mouna), while the second half visualizes the beautiful, rhythmic walking of the child Murugan, which is the reward for that silence.

1. Breaking the Cycle of Birth and Death

Arunagirinathar begins by addressing the fear of Yama (Andhakan – The Blind One/Death). He laments the cycle where Yama arrives daily to torture the soul, or metaphorically, the “death” we suffer every day through worldly attachments. He prays to cut off the “Sangam” (Association) with worldly desires and lust (Arivaiyar), which creates the “Guna” (characteristics/tendencies) that bind the soul. He addresses Murugan as the “Mukkuna Maala”—the One who transcends the three Gunas (Sattva, Rajas, Tamas) or the One who controls them.

2. Transcending Time and Duality

The poet describes the state of enlightenment as transcending the duality of “Andhi Pagal” (Day and Night). In spiritual terms, this means going beyond the passage of time and the alternating states of waking and sleeping to reach the eternal state of “Turiya.” He asks for the strength to destroy the “Indriya Sanchalam”—the agitation and wavering of the five senses. The method to achieve this control is to sing poems (Kavi Padi) about the greatness of Murugan’s Lotus Feet (Ambuya Padam).

3. The Realization of Tiruchendur

This verse describes a deep meditative process. Arunagirinathar says one must “Feel and Feel” (Unarndhu Unarndhu) the essence of Sendhil (Tiruchendur). It is not enough to just visit the temple; one must realize the divine vibration of the place. Through this deep feeling, one comes to “Know and Know” (Arindhu Arindhu) the Lord Kandhan. Finally, the soul must “Go into that Knowledge” (Arivinil Sendru). This describes the journey from feeling God to knowing God, and finally merging into that Consciousness.

4. The State of Absolute Silence (Summa Iru)

This is the most profound philosophical section of the song. The poet describes the dissolution of the ego. He asks for a state where:

  1. Chindhai Avizhndhu: The mind/intellect unties its knots and dissolves.
  2. Urai Ozhithu: Speech stops (Silence/Mauna).
  3. En Seyal Azhindhu: The sense of “I am the doer” (Karma) is destroyed. He asks, “When will I attain this Mey (Truth) where I am nothing, and get Your true Darshan?”

5. Surrender of the King of Devas

The song shifts from philosophy to the glory of Murugan. It recalls how Indra (Purandaran) cried out “Saran! Saran!” (Surrender! Surrender!) to get his kingdom (Pathi) back from the demons. Murugan is described as the “Karumala” (Cloud-hued/Black destroyer) who exterminated the Asuras (Arakkar) to save the Devas. He is also described as the one who won the shoulders of Valli (Kunjari – meaning one raised by elephants or noble like an elephant).

6. The Shining Bells of the Divine Waist

Arunagirinathar now visualizes the beautiful form of the child Murugan walking towards him. He describes the golden waist ornaments (Thiru Arai) that shine like lightning (Minnal). The bells on the waist belt (Kinkini) make the sound “Kinin Kinin Kinin”. As the child moves, the heavy ear ornaments (Kundalam) swing back and forth, casting a radiant light (Prabai Veesa) that illuminates the surroundings.

7. The Rhythmic Anklets of the Toddler

The auditory experience intensifies. The poet describes the rhythmic walking style of the child. The anklets (Sathangai) and the warrior rings (Thandai) on the holy feet clash together. Arunagirinathar uses onomatopoeia to replicate this divine sound: “Thanan Thanan” and “Galin Galin”. This rhythmic description is meant to mesmerize the mind of the devotee, pulling it away from worldly noise to focus on the divine sound of the Lord’s steps.

8. The Mother’s Melting Heart

The song concludes with a touching scene of divine motherhood. Goddess Parvati (Sankari) is watching her son Murugan walk. Seeing his beautiful, faltering toddler steps (Chezhum Thalar Nadai), her mind melts in love (Manam Kuzhaindhu Uruga). Arunagirinathar addresses Murugan as the one who brings joy to his mother and is worshipped by the entire lineage of devotees (Santhathi) and the world (Jagam). He is the Saravana Perumal residing in Tiruchendur.

Summary

“Andhaganvarundhinam” is a journey from Fear to Bliss. It begins with the fear of Death and the struggle against the senses. It then prescribes a rigorous path of Gnana Yoga: dissolving the mind, stopping speech, and destroying the ego (“My Action”). Once this emptiness is achieved, the Divine fills it. The reward for this intense meditation is the vision of the Child Murugan of Tiruchendur, walking with jingling anklets (Galin Galin) and swinging earrings, a sight that melts even the heart of the Supreme Mother, Parvati.
