The Essence of Thiruppugazh 25 aruNamaNimEvu (thiruchchendhUr)
This song is a prayer for “Vakku” (Divine Speech). Arunagirinathar begins by describing how his mind is submerged in the sensory pleasures of the world, losing track of time and truth. He prays to be rescued from this state and asks Murugan to gift him with “Senchol” (Pure, Eloquent Words) so that he may spend his life singing the Lord’s praise instead of flattering mortals.
1. The Decorations of Illusion
Arunagirinathar begins by describing the intense sensory allure of worldly women. He details their ornamentation: they wear “Aruna Mani” (Red Gems/Rubies) and are anointed with fragrant “Mrugamadha” (Musk) and “Pateera” (Sandalwood paste). These scents and sights are described as “Abinava Visala”—fresh and expansive. The poet highlights how these external decorations serve to mask the reality, creating a “Golden Pot” (Ampon Kumbam) of illusion that captivates the mind of the observer.
2. The Immersion in Pleasure
The poet uses a ritualistic metaphor to describe his entrapment. He says he is “Muzhugi” (Immersed/Bathed) in the “Leelai” (Play/Game) of these women. Just as an idol is bathed during an Abhishekam, the poet feels he is bathed in the sweat and struggle of lust. He describes the physical act as a conflict or a battle (Por) that leaves him exhausted (Aravum Uravadi). This imagery suggests that what the world calls enjoyment is actually a drowning experience for the soul.
3. The Loss of Time and Intellect
Arunagirinathar confesses that this obsession has destroyed his perception of time. He says he is stuck in a state where “Iravu Pagal Mohana Agiye”—Day and Night have merged into one blur of delusion. He does not respect the earth or the reality around him (Padiyil Madiyamal). He admits that his intellect has been dulled by the constant disentangling of jewelry and hair (Izhai Kalaiya), leaving no room for higher thoughts.
4. The Prayer for “Senchol” (Divine Eloquence)
This is the heart of the song. Realizing his wretched state, Arunagirinathar asks for a specific cure. He prays: “En Nenjil Senchol Tharuvaye.”
-
Senchol means “Red Words” or “Perfect, Refined, Eloquent Tamil.” He asks Murugan to plant these divine words in his heart so that he can sing the glory of the Lord’s twin feet (Inai Adigal Padi). He realizes that the only way to purify a tongue stained by lust is to use it to sing Thiruppugazh.
5. The Son of the Vedic Dancer
The song shifts to the glory of Lord Shiva to establish Murugan’s lineage. Shiva is described as the one with “Kudila Sadai” (Twisted/Matted Locks) where snakes with gem-stones (Tharuna Mani) dance (Ada). Shiva is hailed as the source of the “Chathur Marai” (Four Vedas) and the wearer of the “Sanga Kuzhai” (Conch-shell Earring). Murugan is addressed as the son given by this Supreme Lord (Tharu Muruga), inheriting the essence of Vedic wisdom.
6. The Saviour of the Elephant (Gajendra Moksham)
Arunagirinathar invokes a famous Vaishnavite legend to praise Murugan’s uncle, Lord Vishnu. He describes the scene where the elephant Gajendra (Mavali), who was in a state of rut (Adhi Madhaka Pola), was caught by a crocodile. The elephant, realizing his own strength was useless, cleared his mind (Thelivinudan) and cried out “Moolame!” (Oh Primal Source!). This refers to the concept of total surrender (Saranagati).
7. The Mercy of the Cloud-Hued Lord
Continuing the story, the poet describes how Lord Vishnu (Mayan), the cloud-hued one (Mega Sayalar), immediately responded to the elephant’s cry. Vishnu cut the crocodile (Mudhali) and saved the devotee. Arunagirinathar addresses Murugan as “Thiru Maruga”—the Nephew of this compassionate Vishnu. By linking this story, the poet implies: “Just as Your uncle saved the elephant from the crocodile, You must save me from the crocodile of Lust.”
8. The Victorious Vel at Tiruchendur
The song concludes by praising Murugan’s valor at Tiruchendur. He is described as “Jaya Saravana” (Victorious Saravana). He used his Vel to pierce the chest of the demon Surapadman (Suran Marbodu) and the Krauncha mountain (Silai). He is the “Manohara” (Stealer of Hearts) who resides in Tiruchendur (Sendhil). The poet surrenders to this “Kandha Perumale,” confident that the Slayer of Surapadman will grant him the “Senchol” he prayed for.
Summary
“Arunamanimevu” is a prayer for the Purification of Speech. Arunagirinathar contrasts the “Decorated Women” of the first half with the “Decorated Lord” of the second half. He admits to being lost in the “Play of Lust” day and night. However, he remembers how Lord Vishnu saved the elephant Gajendra when he cried out “Moolame.” Using this precedent, the poet cries out to Murugan, the Nephew of Vishnu, asking Him to save him from delusion and grant him the gift of “Senchol”—divine poetry—so he can spend the rest of his life singing at Tiruchendur.
