The Essence of Thiruppugazh 33 iruLvirikuzhalai (thiruchchendhUr)
This song is a dramatic study of “False Love vs. Divine Wisdom.” Arunagirinathar vividly details the theatrical and manipulative tactics used in commercial relationships (prostitution), describing the eventual humiliation of the man involved. He contrasts this with the lush, fertile landscape of Tiruchendur and the supreme wisdom of Murugan, who instructed even Lord Shiva.
1. The Theatrics of Attraction
Arunagirinathar begins by exposing the calculated physical gestures used to entrap men. He describes the women loosening their dark, cloud-like hair (Irul Viri Kuzhalai) to let it spread mesmeretically. They intentionally let their garments slip (Thukilai Negizhthu) to reveal their bodies. They stare intensely with the corners of their eyes (Iru Kadai Vizhiyu Murukki). The poet highlights that these are not natural actions of love, but rehearsed performances designed to catch the attention of “Mainthar” (men).
2. The Betel Nut Conversation
The poet details the social interaction used to initiate contact. The women act out a scene asking for betel leaves and areca nuts (Ilai Pilavu), which was a traditional romantic gesture or ice-breaker in ancient Tamil culture. They speak many pleasing words (Maru Mozhi Palavu) and laugh intermittently (Idai Idai Sirithu) to charm the victim. This “performance” (Nadithu) is designed to create a false sense of intimacy and approachability.
3. The Financial Thermometer of Love
Arunagirinathar bluntly describes the transactional nature of this relationship. The woman invites the man home with a sweet “Come” (Varukena). She embraces him on a flower-bedecked mattress (Malar Amali). However, the poet notes that she “Melts and comforts” (Urukki Thetravu) him only in proportion to the “Incoming Wealth” (Varu Porul Alavil). The affection is measured strictly by the weight of the gold or money the man possesses.
4. The Humiliation of the penniless
The song takes a dark turn here. When the wealth runs dry, the same woman who welcomed him with flowers now beats him (Adithu) and chases him out of the house (Manai Pukuthil… Pokkavum). The poet calls this “Oruthalai Maruvu Punarchchi”—a one-sided, false union. He asks, “When will I escape the blame (Vasai) of these scoundrels (Thoorthargal) and learn to praise Your holy feet?” This verse serves as a harsh warning about the inevitable disgrace of lustful pursuits.
5. The Roaring River of Gems
The song shifts abruptly from the sordid city streets to the majestic nature of Tiruchendur. Arunagirinathar describes a powerful river (likely the Thamirabarani) flowing towards the sea. The water force is so strong that it dislodges gemstones (Guru Mani) and diamonds (Vayiram) from the mountains. The rushing water makes the bamboo (Kazhai) look white or frightened, and the noise is deafening. This imagery represents the untamed power and wealth of nature surrounding Murugan’s abode.
6. The Fertile Delta of Chendur
The river’s journey creates the landscape. The water fills deep pits (Kuzhi Padu Kaluzhi) and buries them with sand. It creates mounds (Thidar) and small islands (Thuruthie) where the sand packs tightly. The river deposits “Vandal” (fertile sediment) along with flowers washed down from the cool, shady groves (Kulir Nizhal Aruvi). This description emphasizes that Tiruchendur is a land of abundance, fed by nature’s bounty.
7. The Captive of the Millet Field
Amidst this natural beauty, the poet locates Lord Murugan. He describes Murugan as the “Senthil Vazhvu” (The Life/Prosperity of Tiruchendur). This Supreme Lord is described as being “Captivated” (Aatpadu) by Valli, the young hunter girl (Ilaiya Kurathi). Valli is depicted guarding the millet crops (Thinai) from a loft (Idhanil). While the man in the first half of the song is captivated by greed and lust, Murugan is captivated by the pure, simple love of Valli.
8. The Guru of the Moon-Wearer
The song concludes by establishing Murugan’s supreme authority. He is the one who taught the “Shastras” (The meaning of the Vedas/Pranava) to Lord Shiva. Shiva is described as the “Iraivar” (God) who wears the sprouting young moon (Mulai Ila Mathi) on his matted hair. By teaching the Father, Murugan became the “Thambiran” (Supreme Master). The poet notes that Murugan protects those who perform true penance (Thavam), offering a stark contrast to the wasted life of the lustful man.
Summary
“Irulvirikuzhalai” is a song of Contrast between Exploitation and Devotion. Arunagirinathar graphically depicts the lifecycle of a transactional relationship: the seduction, the fake intimacy, the extraction of wealth, and the violent rejection when the money ends. He contrasts this “One-sided Love” with the “Divine Love” found in Tiruchendur. He describes the fertile river that brings gems to the feet of Murugan, and Murugan himself, who is captivated not by gold, but by the pure devotion of Valli. The song teaches that while worldly love humiliates, the grace of the Supreme Guru (who taught Shiva) protects and elevates the soul.
