The Essence of Thiruppugazh 34 udhadhiyaRalmoNdu (thiruchchendhUr)

This song is a brutally honest “De-glamorization” of the human body. Arunagirinathar systematically strips away the poetic metaphors usually used to describe female beauty, revealing the biological reality of aging and decay. He contrasts this perishable body with the eternal, supreme power of Lord Murugan, before whom even the Trinity bows.

1. The Fading of Dark Clouds (Hair)

Arunagirinathar begins by mocking the standard poetic comparison of a woman’s hair to dark, rain-bearing clouds. He describes how clouds drink water from the ocean (Udhadhi) and become dark blue (Neelam) and heavy. However, he points out that the hair of the women, which was once compared to these clouds, eventually turns white and wispy like Cotton (Panju Polay). This imagery serves as a reminder that the “darkness” of youth is fleeting and will inevitably be replaced by the frailty of old age.

2. The Reality of “Spear-Like” Eyes

Poets often compare eyes to sharp spears (Vel). Arunagirinathar deconstructs this by describing the physical reality of the eye. He mentions the rheum or discharge (Peelai) that gathers in the corners of the eyes. He describes the body not as a temple of beauty, but as a structure of blood (Uthiram) and flesh that smells of “Vem Pulal” (Raw/Burnt Meat). He asks the mind to stop being deluded by the “Spear” metaphor and look at the “Meat” reality.

3. The Collapse of Form

The poet continues his anatomical dissection. He references the poetic comparisons of a woman’s chest to elephant tusks (Matha Karada Thanthi) or golden pots (Kumbam). He bluntly states that these forms eventually lose their firmness and become mere “Thol” (Hanging Skin/Leather). By using such harsh descriptions, Arunagirinathar aims to induce “Vairagya” (Dispassion) in the listener, proving that lust is based on a temporary illusion of form that time destroys.

4. The Prayer for Servitude

After realizing the decaying nature of the body (Vanam Azhiyum), Arunagirinathar questions his own intelligence. He asks, “Why do I not think about the path of servitude (Adimai Anbu) at Your holy feet?” He realizes that true wisdom lies in understanding the state of the body (Nilai Thanai Unarnthu) and redirecting that love towards God, rather than wasting it on “skin and bone.”

5. The Assembly of the Supreme Gods

The song shifts from the pettiness of the human body to the grandeur of the Divine hierarchy. Arunagirinathar visualizes a scene where the greatest gods wait to worship Murugan:

  1. Brahma: The four-faced Creator sitting on the fragrant Lotus (Ithazh Pothiya… Thamarai).
  2. Vishnu: The Protector (Naranan) sleeping on the milky ocean (Pal Udadhi) with the serpent Adisesha (Nanjar Aru).
  3. Shiva: The Destroyer (Chandrasekaran) who embraces Uma.
  4. Indra: The King of Devas (Vasavan). The poet states that all these supreme beings stand and bow (Ninru Thazhum) before Murugan.

6. The Milk of Universal Wisdom

Arunagirinathar describes Murugan as “Suka Maintha” (The Joyous Son). He refers to the specific incident where Murugan drank milk from Shakti (Parvati), the Mother of the Universe (Akila Saka Anda Nayaki). This was not ordinary milk; it was “Gnana Pal” (The Milk of Wisdom/Bliss). By drinking from the source of all energy (Shakti), Murugan imbibed the power and wisdom of the entire cosmos, making him the Supreme Commander.

7. The Ocean’s Tribute at Tiruchendur

The poet describes the majestic setting of Tiruchendur. He depicts the ocean waves (Alai) rushing towards the shore with speed (Muduki). The waves throw up “Mulai Muruku Sangu”—conch shells that are young and rough/thorny. The water spreads extensively, filling the bay. This imagery suggests that the ocean itself is offering its treasures (Conches) to the Lord who resides on its shore.

8. The Master of Prosperity

The song concludes by addressing Murugan as “Thambirane” (The Absolute Master). He is the one who grants “Senthil Vazhvu”—the prosperous, auspicious life associated with Tiruchendur. After stripping away the false value of the human body in the first half, the poet establishes that the only true “Life” (Vazhvu) is the spiritual richness granted by the Lord of Tiruchendur.

Summary

“UdhadhiyaRalmoNdu” is a song of Disillusionment and Glorification. Arunagirinathar brutally exposes the biological reality of the human body—hair turning to cotton, eyes filling with rheum, and the body smelling of raw meat—to kill the instinct of lust. He contrasts this decaying filth with the supreme glory of Lord Murugan. The song emphasizes that Murugan is not a minor deity, but the Supreme Lord before whom Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and Indra bow. He is the Master of Tiruchendur who drank the milk of Supreme Wisdom.
