The Essence of Thiruppugazh 35 urukkampEsiya (thiruchchendhUr)
This song is a prayer for Divine Slavery. Arunagirinathar contrasts the “Slavery to Lust” (where the master is a deceitful, money-minded woman) with the “Slavery to God” (where the master is the compassionate Lord Murugan). He begs to be transferred from the former to the latter.
1. The Actors of False Empathy
Arunagirinathar begins by unmasking the deceptive nature of worldly attraction. He describes women who speak with “Urukkam”—melting, emotional words that sound full of empathy and love. However, he labels them “Neeliyar” (Deceitful pretenders). Their true intention is only to snatch money (Kasukal Parikkum). They are “Dosishigal” (Full of faults) and “Moka Vikarigal” (Twisted by lust). The poet warns his mind not to respect or heed (Mathiyathe) these actors who are actually the creators of great blame (Ma Pazhi Karigal).
2. The Venomous Calculation of Love
The poet uses a harsh metaphor to describe the danger of these relationships. He compares these arrogant women (Veerigal) to “Kol Aravu” (Deadly Cobras). Just as a snake bites, they strike at the man’s wealth and dignity. Their affection is strictly transactional: their heart opens only to the exact measure of the money given (Kasu Alave Manam). Arunagirinathar laments, “Why do I desire (Aasaigal Puriveno) these ‘Thurigal’ (women of loose morals) whose love is entirely calculated?”
3. The Sun-Like Crown of Grace
The song shifts from the darkness of the “Cobra” to the brightness of the “Sun.” Arunagirinathar visualizes Lord Murugan wearing a magnificent crown (Ma Mudi) that shines like the Sun (Arukkan Pol Oli Veesiya). He asks Murugan to look at him with his “Arut Kan” (Eye of Grace). The poet desires to be beautified by this divine glance, replacing the ugliness of his sins with the “Nalam” (Goodness) that comes from the Lord’s radiant presence.
4. The Plea for Divine Slavery
This is the central prayer of the song. Arunagirinathar asks Murugan to initiate a conversation with him (Sethigal Pesiya). He specifically asks to be treated as a slave or a servant. He prays, “Please decide that ‘This fellow is My slave’ (Adippan Than Ena) and accept me.” He wants to be gathered into the refuge of Murugan’s Lotus Feet (Athikkan) daily, seeking a permanent employment in the service of the Divine rather than the service of lust.
5. The Essence of the Vedas
The poet extols the theological greatness of Murugan. He describes Him as the meaning surpassing the “Irukkum” (The Rig Veda / The Existing Truth). He is the essence of music (Isai) and the core of the Vedas. He is the one worshipped by the Devas to remove their “Idukkan” (Suffering/Misery). This verse establishes that the Master the poet seeks to serve is not a local deity, but the Universal Truth revered by the celestial beings.
6. The Goal of Shiva’s Delight
Arunagirinathar connects Murugan to Lord Shiva. He describes Shiva as the one who wears the “Thathaki” (Aththi / Bauhinia) flower garland on his matted hair (Veni). Murugan is the “Ilakkan” (The Goal / The Grammar of Life) whom Shiva worships and delights in. The poet implies that by serving Murugan, one attains the ultimate goal that even Lord Shiva cherishes.
7. The Nephew of the Cosmic Light
The lineage of Murugan is further explored through Lord Vishnu. The poet describes Vishnu as “Jaga Chem Jothi”—the Red/Golden Light of the Universe. He is Madhavan, the consort of Lakshmi. Murugan is the Marugone (Nephew) of this supreme protector. The verse mentions that Murugan possesses holy feet (Thal Udai Nayakan) that are praised by pure-hearted ascetics (Thapathar) and Vedic scholars (Vethiyar).
8. The Agricultural Abundance of Tiruchendur
The song concludes with a vivid description of the landscape of Tiruchendur. It is a place of immense fertility.
- Sali: Rich paddy fields.
- Kamala: Lotus flowers.
- Karuppam: Sugarcane.
-
Vazhai: Plantain/Banana groves. Arunagirinathar describes the temple town as “Sezhikkum” (Flourishing). He surrenders to the Perumale (Great Lord) who resides in this prosperous city, suggesting that the spiritual wealth of the devotee will flourish just like the crops of Tiruchendur.
Summary
“Urukkampesiya” is a petition for a Change of Master. Arunagirinathar realizes he has been serving “Deceitful Mistresses” (Lust) who speak fake emotional words (Urukkam) but act like cobras to steal his wealth. He asks to be fired from this miserable job and hired as a slave (Adippan) by Lord Murugan. He envisions Murugan as the Sun-crowned Lord who is the essence of the Vedas and the delight of Shiva and Vishnu. The song assures the devotee that in the fertile lands of Tiruchendur, the “Calculated Love” of the world is replaced by the “Infinite Grace” of God.
