The Essence of Thiruppugazh 674 Pondraa Mandru (Thiruvalangadu)
The 674th hymn of Thiruppugazh, set in the sacred dance-forest of Thiruvalangadu, is a deep meditation on the fragility of life and the necessity of early spiritual intervention. Saint Arunagirinathar urges the seeker to realize that the clock is ticking, and the only shield against the inevitable decay of the body is the grace of Lord Murugan.
1. The Illusory Nature of Family and Wealth
The poet begins by questioning the permanence of what we hold dear. He mentions that we work hard to accumulate wealth and raise children (Pudhalvarum), hoping they will be our eternal support. However, in this world (Puviyude), where everything eventually perishes, these bonds are temporary. We act as if these things are “Ponraa” (undying), but they often fail us when we need spiritual support the most.
2. The Body as a Fragile Cage
Arunagirinathar describes the human body as a “Pun-koodu”—a lowly or wretched cage. We spend our lives decorating and grooming this cage (Singaram) with vanity, but it is merely a temporary residence for the soul. He warns that the “Koottram” (Yama/Death) is always surging and ready to reclaim this frame. Recognizing that we are the soul and not this decorated cage is the first step toward wisdom.
3. Seeking God Before the Onset of Old Age
A powerful theme in this hymn is the urgency of devotion. The poet says we must pray before our “Ninaivu” (memory and intellect) fades away. He describes the vulnerability of old age, where one’s speech might become slurred or incoherent, leading to “Nindhai” (ridicule or reproach) from others. Before that stage of physical and mental decline arrives, one must anchor the mind in the Divine.
4. Dissolving the Poison of Karma
The poet admits that his heart is filled with the “Alanjal” (poison/agitation) of past karmas and sins. He prays that these surging negative actions (Vinai) do not overpower him. He begs Murugan, “Nin-thaal thandhu”—grant me your feet—and take me under your protection. This reflects the belief that divine grace is the only force capable of neutralizing the cumulative effects of past misdeeds.
5. The Nephew of the Protector (Vishnu)
Murugan is addressed as the “Marugone” (nephew) of Lord Vishnu. The poet recalls how Vishnu, as Krishna, lifted the Govardhana hill as an umbrella to protect the calves and the people from torrential rain. He also references Vishnu as the one who “swallowed the world” (Kuvalayam undar) to protect it during the deluge. By linking Murugan to Vishnu, the poet emphasizes Murugan’s role as a supreme protector.
6. The Humble Lover of Valli
The hymn beautifully highlights Murugan’s love for Valli, the daughter of the mountain hunters. Despite being the supreme God, he sought her out and held her feet in his mind (Min-thaal chintha). He went to the millet fields, overwhelmed by love (Mayal), and asked for her grace. This demonstrates the Lord’s extreme accessibility to those who possess pure, unpretentious love.
7. The Fruit of Shiva’s Cosmic Dance
Thiruvalangadu is the site where Lord Shiva performed the Urdhva Tandava (the cosmic dance with the leg raised high) to save the Devas. Murugan is hailed as the “Paattin Payan”—the very fruit or essence of the divine song and dance performed by his father. He is the personification of the grace that emanated from that cosmic rhythm at Thiruvalangadu.
8. Granting the Heart of Courage
In the finale, the poet states that those who worship Murugan’s feet with love will find their sins washed away. Most importantly, the Lord grants them an “Anja Nenjam” (a fearless heart). In a world filled with the fear of death and failure, Murugan provides the inner strength and spiritual “Akkam” (growth) to live a life of absolute courage and peace.
Summary
This hymn serves as a spiritual alarm clock, reminding us that the body is a fragile cage and worldly ties are temporary. It urges us to seek Murugan’s grace while our faculties are still intact, rather than waiting for old age. By identifying Murugan as the essence of Shiva’s cosmic dance and the beloved of Valli, the poet assures us that devotion leads to the destruction of sin and the birth of a fearless heart.
