The Essence of Thiruppugazh 691 igala varuthirai (thirumayilai)

The 691st hymn of Thiruppugazh, set in the famous coastal temple town of Thirumayilai (Mylapore), is a profound prayer where Saint Arunagirinathar laments his lack of spiritual discipline and begs for the company of true devotees.

1. The Roaring Ocean of Karma

Arunagirinathar begins by painting a picture of the world as a place surrounded by a “noisy, roaring ocean” (“Igala Varuthirai”). In this world, the soul is trapped in the cycle of birth, oscillating between fleeting pleasures and inevitable suffering. He speaks of the “Iru Vinai” (The Two Karmas—Good and Bad deeds), which are the root cause of this suffering. His primary prayer is for the removal of these karmic bonds that shackle the soul to the ocean of Samsara.

2. The Heart That Refuses to Melt

The poet confesses his spiritual shortcomings with brutal honesty. He admits that his mind does not harmonize with the Lord’s holy feet (“Manam isaiya ninaikili”). He laments that he has not “melted” in devotion (“Urugili”) nor worshipped with a full heart. He feels guilty for not praising the Lord—who is the son of the One who shares His body with Uma (Shiva)—with the fervor that a devotee should possess.

3. The Absence of Wisdom and Silence

Continuing his self-reflection, the poet admits to being filled with “Madamai” (Ignorance/Foolishness) rather than wisdom. He states that he does not know the true “Mathi Unarvu” (Intellectual realization of the Divine). Most importantly, he has failed to attain the state of “Maunam” (Divine Silence)—the state where all speech and thought cease, leading to ultimate realization. Instead, he finds himself trapped in the noise of worldly distractions.

4. The Cry for the Company of Saints

Trapped in the illusion (“Maya”) and suffering (“Idaru”), the poet asks for a specific remedy. He does not ask for wealth or power, but for the company of the Lord’s “Adiyavar” (Holy Devotees). He asks, “Will there ever be a day (‘Oru Naale’) when Your grace overflows, allowing me to merge and mingle with Your sweet devotees?” He realizes that Satsang (association with the holy) is the cure for his worldly entanglement.

5. The Humble Lover of Valli

The hymn shifts to glorify Murugan’s nature. Arunagirinathar recalls the romance of Valli and Murugan. To win over Valli, the hunter girl of the mountain peaks (“Sigara Thanagiri”), Murugan spoke “Silatha Vasanam”—words that were humble, sweet, and subservient, like a servant to a master. The poet marvels at how the Supreme Lord lowered Himself to speak pleasing words to a simple devotee, showing His boundless “Arul Neetha” (Ocean of Grace).

6. The Essence of Scripture

The verse “Sirana Purana…” is a rhythmic string of praises describing Murugan’s theological supremacy. He is the Ancient One (“Purana”). He is the Refuge (“Saranu”). He is the “Saravanabhava” born in the reeds. He is the Light (“Oli”) that shines in the cave of the heart (“Guha”). Ultimately, He is the “Porul” (The Substance/Meaning) found at the very end of the Vedas (“Marai Mudivuru”), implying He is the conclusion of all spiritual knowledge.

7. The Source of OM and the Destroyer of Forts

The poet identifies Murugan as the embodiment of the Pranava Mantra—OM. He describes Him as “Agara, Ugara, Magara”—the three sounds (A-U-M) that make up the sacred syllable. He is the “Arul” (Grace) and “Therul” (Clarity). In contrast to this subtle form, He is also the warrior who released the Spear (“Ayil”) to destroy the strong, hostile fortresses of the Asuras, protecting the cosmic order.

8. The Glory of Mylapore

In the concluding lines, Arunagirinathar praises the location of the temple: Thirumayilai (Mylapore). He describes it as a city rich in beauty (“Azhagu”), scholarship (“Pulamai”), glory (“Magimai”), and prosperity (“Valam”). He addresses the deity as the Son of Shiva (“Hara Hara Siva Sutha”) who resides daily in this magnificent city, serving as the Supreme Lord (“Perumale”) of His devotees.

Summary

This Thiruppugazh is a prayer for spiritual redemption through the company of saints. Arunagirinathar confesses his inability to control his mind, his lack of wisdom, and his failure to attain divine silence. He contrasts his own ignorance with the humility of Murugan, who spoke sweet words to Valli. He identifies Murugan as the embodiment of OM (A-U-M), the essence of the Vedas, and the warrior who destroyed the Asuras. The song concludes by glorifying the culturally rich city of Mylapore, asking the Lord who resides there to grant the poet the salvation of holy company.
