The Essence of Thiruppugazh 72 nilaiyApporuLai (thiruchchendhUr)
This song is a study in “Biological Reality vs. Divine Reality.” Arunagirinathar uses graphic realism to describe the degradation of the human body, contrasting it with the “Imperishable Pure Form” (Azhiya Punitha Vadivu) of Lord Murugan.
1. The Great Misconception
Arunagirinathar begins by identifying the fundamental error of human existence. He says, “Nilaiya Porulai Udal Akkaruthi”—”I mistook the unstable, impermanent matter to be the Body/Reality.” The poet realizes he has spent his “Long Time” (Nedu Naal Pozhuthum) believing that this transient physical vessel was the ultimate truth. Consequently, he feels his time has been spent “Avame Poy”—entirely in vain. The starting point of spiritual ignorance is attachment to the perishable body.
2. The Faltering of the Senses
The poet describes the inevitable decay of the biological machine. As age advances, “Nirai Poy”—the fullness or vitality of life departs. He lists the failure of the sensory organs: becoming “Sevidu” (Deaf) and “Kurudu” (Blind). He describes the body becoming a vessel for “Pinigal” (Diseases). The “Porigal” (The five senses/Indriyas) become “Thadumari”—confused, faltering, and unable to coordinate. The instrument through which he enjoyed the world is now broken.
3. The Indignity of the Deathbed
Arunagirinathar does not shy away from the harsh reality of the final days. He describes the state of incontinence where “Mala Neer” (Excrement and Urine) increase and soil the bed (Sayana Misai). The person loses control over their bodily functions. The poet says this state becomes the “Kuri” (Sign) that the end is near; it becomes the “Neri” (Path) towards “Madi” (Death). It is a picture of total helplessness and loss of dignity.
4. The Light Beyond the Vedas
In this moment of darkness and filth, the poet prays for the Ultimate Light. He asks for the “Malar Thal Kamalam”—The Lotus Feet of the Lord. He describes Murugan as “Oli Yay”—the Light. Crucially, he notes that this Light is “Marai Potru Ariya”—rare or difficult even for the Vedas to praise fully. The poet seeks to be lifted from the bed of impurity to the Lotus of Purity.
5. The Evaporation of the Ocean
The song shifts to the martial power of Murugan. The poet describes the destruction of the “Kolai Kaat Avunar”—The murderous, forest-like Asuras. Murugan’s power is such that He turned the “Ma Chaladhi” (The Great Ocean) into a mere “Kulam” (Pond) and made it dry up (Suvara). This metaphor illustrates that the Lord can shrink the “Ocean of Samsara” (Cycle of Birth and Death) into a tiny puddle that the devotee can easily step across.
6. Splitting the Ancient Mango Tree
Arunagirinathar references the climax of the Surasamharam war. He mentions the “Mudhu Sudham”—The Ancient Mango Tree. When the demon Surapadman hid in the ocean as a massive mango tree, Murugan released the “Kodhi Vel”—the Hot/Furious Spear. The Vel went with a specific aim (Kuri Poy), bit into the tree (Kadhuvu), and split it (Pilavu Padam Era). This signifies the destruction of the ancient ego that hides deep within the mind.
7. The Imperishable Pure Form
The poet draws a sharp contrast here. In the first verse, he lamented his own body which is “Nilaiya Porul” (Unstable Matter). Here, he praises Murugan’s form as “Azhiya Punidha Vadivagum”—The Form that is Imperishable and Pure. He addresses the Lord as “Kumara” (The Eternal Youth) who rejoices (Magizh) on the shores of Alaivay (Tiruchendur). The devotee seeks to exchange his rotting body for the vision of this Eternal Form.
8. The Guru and the Servant
The song concludes by highlighting Murugan’s dual nature.
- To the Gods: He is “Aranarku Adhitha Porul Kattiya Adhipa”—The Master who taught the “Supreme Meaning” (Pranava) to Aran (Lord Shiva). He is the Guru of the Highest God.
- To the Humans: He is “Adiyarku Eliya Perumale”—The Great Lord who is simple and accessible to His devotees. The poet finds solace in the fact that the same Lord who instructed Shiva is humble enough to save a helpless human on his deathbed.
Summary
“Nilaiyapporulai” is a song of Physical Despair and Spiritual Hope. Arunagirinathar graphically describes the horror of aging—blindness, deafness, and the indignity of lying in one’s own waste on the deathbed. He realizes he wasted his life thinking this “Unstable Body” was real. He prays to be saved from this filth by the “Lotus Feet” of the Lord. He meditates on Murugan’s power to dry up oceans and split the demon-tree, and finally finds comfort in the Lord of Tiruchendur, who possesses an “Imperishable Pure Form” and is accessible to even the simplest devotee.
