The Essence of Thiruppugazh 76 padarpuviyinmeedhu (thiruchchendhUr)
This song serves as a powerful Contrast of Character. In the first half, Arunagirinathar vividly depicts the arrogance of a poet who learns literature only to seek titles, flags, and fame. In the second half, he contrasts this with the extreme humility and sacrifice of Lord Vishnu, who plucked out his own eye to worship Lord Shiva. The song implies: “I am arrogant for knowing a few words; look at the Supreme Vishnu who sacrificed his eye for a weapon.”
1. The Intellectual Marketplace
Arunagirinathar begins by describing the vast, spreading earth (Padar Puvi) as a place filled with deceitful people (Vanjargal). He admits to joining this crowd, using language not for truth, but to “speak big” like the Sun (Banu Vay Viyanthu Urai). He describes studying “flawless moral books” (Pazhudh Il Peru Seela Nool) and the ancient Sangam Literature (Sanga Padal), but implies that his study was superficial—aimed only at impressing others in the social marketplace rather than internalizing the wisdom.
2. The Abuse of Literary Genres
The poet lists the specific Tamil literary forms he mastered to feed his ego. He mentions Kavya (Epics), Thiruvalluva Devar Vaimai (The Truth of Saint Thiruvalluvar/Thirukkural), and ancient proverbs (Pazhamozhi). He claims to have learned the “Sandham” (Rhythm) of poetry. However, he confesses that he used these sacred texts merely to compose “Prabandhams” (Minor literary works) like Madal, Barani, Kovai, and Kalambagam. Instead of using literature to liberate the soul, he used it to construct a “Crore of Complex Verses” (Kodi Kol Prabandham) to show off his skill.
3. The King of “Sweet” Arrogance
Arunagirinathar describes the height of his vanity. He wanted to be known as “Madhura Kavirajan”—The King of Sweet Poetry. He aspired to the honors traditionally given to court poets: the Ven Kudai (Royal White Umbrella), Virudhu Kodi (Flag of Honor), and the Thandigai (Palanquin). He sought the accompaniment of Thala Mela (Drums and Cymbals) to announce his arrival. He essentially wanted to be treated like a minor deity, seeking the “Wind of Rhythm” (Chanda Vayu) to blow his fame across the land.
4. The Misery of Fame
The poet ends the autobiographical section with a weary question: “Alandhai Thavirndhidatho?” (Alandhai means poverty, misery, or the distress of wandering). He realizes that this endless chase for flags, umbrellas, and titles is actually a form of spiritual poverty. He asks Murugan, “When will this distress of seeking fame end?” He recognizes that the burden of maintaining this “Poet King” persona is a heavy, miserable rag (Kanthai) that he wishes to cast off.
5. The Terror of Jalandhara
The song shifts dramatically to a Puranic legend to demonstrate true devotion. The poet describes a great war (Adal Poruthu Pusal) caused by the demon Jalandhara (Jalandharan). This demon was incredibly powerful (Adhibela Katora). He had performed intense worship of Shiva (Sankara Arahara… Sevithu), melting his heart (Ul Urugi), and had gained invincibility. This demon began to torment the worlds, creating a crisis that required divine intervention.
6. The Quest for the Discus (Chakra)
To defeat this invincible demon, Lord Vishnu (Sengan Mal) realized he needed a weapon that could “cut the body” (Udal Thadiyum). He needed the Sudarshana Chakra (Azhi). However, this weapon belonged to Lord Shiva. Vishnu decided to worship Shiva to obtain it. This verse highlights that even the Preserver of the Universe had to perform penance to destroy evil, contrasting with the poet’s earlier belief that he could conquer the world with just mere words.
7. The Sacrifice of the Lotus Eye
This is the climax of the song. Vishnu vowed to worship Shiva with 1,000 Lotus flowers (Ambuya Malargal Dhasa Nooru). Lord Shiva, to test Vishnu’s devotion, secretly removed one flower. When Vishnu reached the end of the worship, he found “Oru Malar Iladhu”—one flower was missing. Without hesitating for a moment, Vishnu plucked out his own “Sen Kan” (Red Eye/Lotus Eye) and placed it on Shiva’s feet to complete the count (Kova Nindhidu).
-
The Lesson: The poet wanted “Flags and Umbrellas” for his poetry. Vishnu gave his “Own Eye” for Dharma.
8. The Grace at Tiruchendur
Arunagirinathar concludes by connecting this legend to Murugan. Murugan is the “Bala” (Son) of that “Udhaviya Magesar”—The Great Lord Shiva who helped Vishnu by granting the Chakra upon seeing his sacrifice. Murugan is also the husband of Indra’s daughter (Deivayanai). The poet asks this Lord, who resides in the glorious city of Tiruchendur, to come and “Rule over him” (Aalai Vandhu Arul). He prays that the Lord who honored Vishnu’s sacrifice will also accept the poet’s surrender and end his vanity.
Summary
“Padarpuviyinmeedhu” is a song of Humility. Arunagirinathar begins by confessing his past arrogance as a poet. He describes how he mastered the Thirukkural and complex genres like Madal and Kovai only to demand titles like “Kavirajan” (King of Poets), white umbrellas, and palanquins. He realizes this fame is a source of misery. To illustrate true devotion, he narrates the legend of Lord Vishnu destroying the demon Jalandhara. When Vishnu worshipped Shiva for the Sudarshana Chakra and found one flower missing, he plucked out his own eye to complete the ritual. The poet asks Murugan, the son of the Shiva who accepted that eye, to cure him of his ego and rule over him at Tiruchendur.
