The Essence of Thiruppugazh 769 konGku laaviya (cheekaalzhi)

This song is historically significant as it directly references the life of Saint Thirugnana Sambandar (an avatar of Murugan) and the intense religious debates that took place in Madurai during the 7th century.

1. The Shadow of Fragrant Hair

The song begins with a description of the sensory entrapment of lust. Arunagirinathar speaks of the “Kongu Laviya Kuzhal”—hair that is laden with the fragrance of pollen and flowers. He mentions the “shadow” (Nizhal) of this hair, implying that the poet has been living in the darkness of this attraction. He describes the eyes of these women as “Nanja Laviya Vizhi”—eyes that are smeared with poison (or collyrium that acts like poison), capable of killing the spiritual clarity of the observer.

2. The Illusion of the Slender Waist

The poet continues to dissect the physical form that captivates men. He compares the waist (Idai) to a slender creeper or branch (Kombu) and the breasts to mountains (Kunru). He describes their speech as “Manbu Koorvana”—seemingly noble or cultured—and their lips as red as coral (Sey Ithazh). However, Arunagirinathar recognizes that this “Nectar” (Amuthu) of their smile is merely a mental projection (Manathaya), a fantasy that hides the reality of the flesh.

3. The Doubting Traditionalist

Arunagirinathar reflects on his own wasted time. He calls himself a “Sangai Yali”—a person ruled by Sanka (Doubt). He admits to being a “Sampradayan”—someone who blindly followed social customs and traditions without understanding the ultimate Truth. He regrets that his speech was filled with “Avinsol” (Useless or weak words) rather than the praise of God. He realizes he has been an “Avalan” (A wretch/Sufferer) who hid the truth (Olithiga) and lived a life of pretense.

4. The Anklets in Dream and Wakefulness

The turning point of the poet’s salvation is the vision of the Lord’s feet. He mentions the “Thandai Noopura”—the tinkling anklets worn by Murugan. He prays to see these “Two Holy Feet” (Iru Kazhal) so that his “Nal Ava” (Daily desires/karmas) will be removed without a trace (Mikai Ara). His vow is powerful: he promises never to forget this vision, whether he is in a deep sleep dreaming (Kanavilu) or fully awake (Nanavilu).

5. The Roar of the Northern Fire

The song shifts to the martial glory of Murugan. The poet describes the scene of the Surasamharam war. The “Vanga Varithi” (The Ocean with ships) roared in agony. The “Thunga Ma Mudi” (The lofty, great heads) of the demons were pulverized to dust. The fire of the battlefield (Vada Anal) dimmed in comparison to the Lord’s rage. The “Alakaigal” (Ghouls/Demons) danced on the battlefield as Murugan mounted His Peacock to restore order.

6. The Guardian of Sanpai (Seerkazhi)

Arunagirinathar identifies the location. He praises Murugan as the “Arumugan” (Six-Faced Lord) who resides in “Azhagiya Sanpai Ma Nagar”—the beautiful, great city of Sanpai (an ancient name for Seerkazhi). He describes the Lord as the one who holds the “Vanja Vel” (The Spear that destroys the deceitful). Murugan is portrayed as the benevolent protector who constantly thinks (Ninaivone) of removing the “Idar” (Suffering) of the Devas who approached Him.

7. The Plucked-Headed Cynics

This verse is a direct historical reference to the Amanars (Jains) of the 7th century. Arunagirinathar uses strong language, reflecting the intense religious rivalry of that era. He calls them “Panga Veeriyar” (Those with flawed heroism) and “Pari Thalai” (Those with plucked/bald heads). He describes them as “Virakinar” (Cunning people) and “Minju Pathakar” (Excessive sinners) who had no use for the path of Dharma (Ara Neri Payanilar). He dismisses them as “Kapadigal” (Hypocrites) bound by worldly attachments.

8. The Verdict of the Eight Thousand

The song concludes with the dramatic climax of the debate in Madurai. The poet refers to the “Enn Ayirar”—the Eight Thousand Jain monks. According to the Periyapuranam legend, after losing the debate and the fire/water trials to Saint Sambandar, these 8000 monks were impaled on stakes (Kazhu Misai).

Arunagirinathar praises Murugan (as Sambandar) for granting the grace (Aruliya) that destroyed the aggression (Munai Keda) of these “Panja Pathakar” (Five-fold sinners), thereby re-establishing Saivism.

Summary

Thiruppugazh 769 is a fusion of Personal Repentance and Historical Triumph.

Arunagirinathar begins by lamenting his entrapment in the “fragrant shadow” of lust, describing how the beauty of women is a mental illusion that blinded him. He calls himself a “doubter” who followed empty traditions and begs to see the Lord’s Anklets in his dreams to end his karma.

He then transitions to the glory of Seerkazhi (Sanpai), identifying Lord Murugan as the divine force behind Saint Sambandar. He vividly recounts the historical victory in Madurai, where the Lord defeated the “plucked-headed” opponents (Jains) and destroyed their influence, thereby removing the suffering of the righteous. The song celebrates Murugan as both the destroyer of internal lust and external falsehood.
