The Essence of Thiruppugazh 810 Thala Naalil Padham (Valzhuvuur)

Thiruppugazh 810, sung at the sacred shrine of Vazhuvur, is a highly autobiographical and mystical masterpiece by Saint Arunagirinathar. The first half of the hymn vividly records the poet’s personal spiritual awakening and his profound experiences with Kundalini Yoga, directly guided by Lord Murugan. The second half transitions into a glorious celebration of the Lord’s martial valor, His role as the Supreme Guru, and His graceful presence in Vazhuvur.

Here is a deep exploration of this remarkable hymn across eight thematic headings.

1. The First Day of Divine Initiation

The hymn opens with Arunagirinathar recalling the most pivotal moment of his life: the day of his spiritual initiation. He speaks of that “first day” (thalai nal) when Lord Murugan intervened, transforming his worldly existence into a life of pure devotion. The Lord instilled a deep, unconditional love within the poet’s heart, making him bow down and praise the divine feet. This was not a realization achieved through independent effort, but a profound awakening triggered by the direct, merciful intervention of the Divine, who personally fed him the inner essence of the supreme spiritual teachings (Upadesam).

2. Immersion in the Ocean of Mantras and Penance

Spiritual awakening is often described as a cleansing process, and the poet beautifully captures this by stating that the Lord bathed him in a vast, purifying ocean. This was not an ocean of water, but an ocean composed of sacred mantras, deep penance (thavam), and supreme wisdom (jnana). By immersing Arunagirinathar in these esoteric practices, Lord Murugan washed away the accumulated karmic impurities of his past, preparing his mind and body to receive the highest cosmic truths.

3. The Four Spiritual Paths and the Nectar of Muthamizh

Lord Murugan systematically guided the poet through the four fundamental stages of spiritual evolution (sathur agam): Sariyai (physical service to the Lord), Kiriyai (ritualistic worship), Yogam (internal meditation), and Jnanam (true spiritual wisdom). Alongside these traditional paths, the Lord fed him the sweet nectar of Muthamizh—the three forms of the Tamil language (literature, music, and drama). The poet proudly declares that this divine Tamil nectar is a rare treasure, entirely unknown even to the celestial beings (Andargal) of the heavens, yet graciously bestowed upon him to compose the Thiruppugazh.

4. The Pinnacle of Yogic Awakening

The hymn deeply delves into the mechanics of Kundalini Yoga. Arunagirinathar explains how the Lord revealed the radiant, brilliant light of the ultimate cosmic sound (Naadha). Murugan guided the poet’s life force to rise upward, establishing his focus firmly at the fragrant gateway of the Sushumna Nadi (the central energy channel in the subtle body, referred to as munsuzhi). By elevating his consciousness to this supreme yogic state, the Lord enabled the poet to leap over and transcend the rigid boundaries of human destiny (vithi).

5. The Unforgettable Vision on the Peacock

Reaching the climax of his spiritual journey, Arunagirinathar describes how the Lord merged him into the lotus of the heart (kamalai pathi), eventually leading his soul to dissolve into the vast, limitless expanse of supreme consciousness, known as Chidakasam (veli). It was in this ultimate state of spiritual liberation that Lord Murugan lovingly appeared before him, seated majestically upon his radiant peacock. Overwhelmed by this supreme act of grace, the poet vows that he will never, ever forget (maravene) this breathtaking vision and the mercy shown to him.

6. The Destructive Power of the Radiant Vel

Following this deep internal reflection, the poem turns outward to celebrate the Lord’s cosmic power. Arunagirinathar praises the invincible, radiant spear—the Vel. When Lord Murugan wielded this divine weapon, it effortlessly shattered the treacherous Krauncha mountain into dust, dried up the massive oceans that hid the demonic forces, and severed the heads of the wicked Asuras. The poet vividly visualizes the severed heads of the demons flying into the sky, forming a gruesome garland—a testament to the Lord’s absolute destruction of ego and cosmic evil.

7. The Supreme Guru to Lord Shiva

The saint proceeds to highlight Lord Murugan’s most exalted title: Swaminatha, the Guru to His own father. He describes Lord Shiva as the playful consort of Goddess Sivakami, the supreme deity who wears a garland of striped, venomous serpents. Yet, even this great Lord Shiva sat as a humble student to listen to his son. Arunagirinathar praises Murugan as the beautiful, lotus-faced Lord who sweetly fed the ultimate meaning of the Pranava Mantra (Omkara) and the essence of Siva Jnanam directly into the ears of His father.

8. The Consort of Valli and Lord of Vazhuvur

In the concluding lines, the cosmic warrior and supreme teacher is intimately grounded as the loving consort of Goddess Valli. The poet describes Valli as the bright, sweet, parrot-like girl who guarded the millet fields on the mountain, her hair adorned with cool, fragrant flower garlands. Praising Murugan as the Lord whose striped rooster banner flies high in the sky while he dances to the praises of the celestials, Arunagirinathar surrenders to Him. He reveres Murugan as the Great Lord who gracefully resides in the cool, lush groves of the sacred city of Vazhuvur.

Summary

Thiruppugazh 810 is a magnificent spiritual autobiography intertwined with cosmic praise. The first half of the hymn is a deeply personal account of Saint Arunagirinathar’s spiritual awakening. He recalls the unforgettable first day when Lord Murugan initiated him, bathed him in an ocean of mantras and wisdom, and taught him the four spiritual paths along with the divine, celestial-defying nectar of the Tamil language. Through the practice of Kundalini Yoga, the Lord guided the poet’s consciousness up the Sushumna channel, transcending human destiny, and granted him a breathtaking vision of the Divine upon the peacock in the boundless space of supreme consciousness. The second half of the poem shifts to glorify Lord Murugan’s cosmic valor: shattering the Krauncha mountain and annihilating the Asuras with his radiant Vel. Finally, Murugan is celebrated as the Supreme Guru who taught the Pranava Mantra to Lord Shiva, the loving husband of the hunter-princess Valli, and the majestic Lord who presides over the lush, sacred city of Vazhuvur, forever dancing beneath his victorious rooster banner.
