The Essence of Thiruppugazh 88 mAyavAdai (thiruchchendhUr)
This song is a harsh, uncompromising critique of the “Industry of Lust.” Arunagirinathar uses graphic language to expose the deceit, gluttony, and sorcery often associated with the brothels of his time. He contrasts this dark underworld with the glorious, righteous power of Murugan’s lineage—specifically invoking the fierce avatars of Narasimha (Vishnu) and the wisdom of Ganesha.
1. The Walking Shops of Illusion
Arunagirinathar begins by stripping away the glamour of lust. He describes the women as wearing “Maya Vadai”—garments of illusion. They arrogantly expose their chests (Thimirnthidu Kongai) to catch the eye. He depicts them as “Vasal Thorum Nadanthu”—walking from door to door. They are described as “Sinungikal”—whiners or complainers. They nag their former lovers (Pazhaiyor), feigning intimacy only to extract money. The poet paints a picture of “love” being reduced to a door-to-door sales pitch.
2. The Sorcery of False Tears
The poet exposes the psychological manipulation used in this trade. He calls them “Vampigal”—mischievous or wicked women. They practice “Vala Nesam”—acting like young, innocent girls in love, weeping (Nainthu Azhu) to melt men’s hearts. More disturbingly, Arunagirinathar mentions “Marunthu Idu Chandigal”—shrews who administer “medicine” (love potions or drugs) to induce “Asai Noy” (The Disease of Desire) in men. They are only interested in men who possess “Vara Perum Porul”—vast wealth that comes in floods.
3. The Cruelty of the Mothers
Arunagirinathar shifts the focus to the mothers of these women, who act as brokers. He calls them “Mindigal”—arrogant, harsh women. If a man runs out of money (Kasu Ilathavar), these mothers lose all “Neyam” (Affection). They ruthlessly chase the men away (Negizhnthu), acting as if they are enforcing “Neethi” (Justice). The poet highlights the brutal transactional nature of these relationships: the moment the gold is gone, the “mother-in-law” figure turns into a merciless evictor.
4. The Drama of the Demoness
The poet condemns the lifestyle of vice. He says these women perform the “Neeli Nadakam”—the drama of Neeli (a mythological demoness known for deceit and fake tears). They are described as “Thondigal”—gluttons who drink the “Palai Ural” (Toddy/Liquor) that oozes from the palm flower spathe. Arunagirinathar asks a rhetorical question: “Uravu Amo?”—”Is it right to have a relationship with such low-class people (Neesar)?” He urges the soul to reject this association with acting, drinking, and gluttony.
5. The Scribe of the Mahabharata
The song shifts abruptly to the divine. Arunagirinathar introduces Murugan as the “Ilaiyone” (Younger Brother) of Lord Ganesha. He describes Ganesha’s face as that of a “Payum Ma Matha Thanthi”—a charging, great rutting elephant. He credits Ganesha with writing the “Maha Bharatham” (The Great Epic). The poet mentions that Ganesha wrote this epic on or with “Para Meru” (Mount Meru). This verse contrasts the “lowly drama” of the women (Verse 4) with the “Great Epic” of Dharma written by Ganesha.
6. The Chest Marked by Love
Arunagirinathar describes the romantic form of Murugan. He mentions “Pavai Yal Kura Mangai”—Valli, the Lady of the Kuravar tribe. Murugan embraces her heavy breasts (Sezhun Thana Bara Meethil). As a result of this embrace, His chest is smeared with “Santhana Kunguma”—the sandalwood and saffron paste from her body. The poet addresses Murugan as “Mani Marba”—The One with the Jewel-like Chest.
-
Contrast: In Verse 1, the poet rejected the “exposed chests” of lustful women. Here, he glorifies the “saffron-smeared chest” of the Lord, symbolizing pure, divine love.
7. The Lion Who Tore the Chest
The poet invokes the Narasimha Avatar of Lord Vishnu to emphasize power. He describes Vishnu taking the form of a “Seeyam” (Lion) to destroy Hiranyakashipu (Asuresan). Narasimha tore open the demon’s chest (Marpai Idanthu) and pulled out the “Pasum Kudar” (Fresh Intestines) to wear as a garland. Murugan is the “Marukone” (Nephew) of this fierce protector. This graphic imagery serves as a warning: the same lineage that protects the devotee can tear apart the ego and evil forces with terrifying power.
8. The Crown of the Vedas
The song concludes with the glory of Lord Shiva and Tiruchendur. Murugan is the Son of “Sankarar” (Shiva), who wears the “Kireeda Sekara” (The Crown of the Head/The Moon or Ganges) and the honey-dripping Kadamba garland. Murugan is addressed as “Deva Nayaka” (Leader of the Gods). He resides in Senthil (Tiruchendur) and grants grace (Ukanthu Arul). The poet seeks the refuge of this Supreme Leader to escape the “Maya” described in the opening lines.
Summary
“Mayavadai” is a song of Rejection and Refuge. Arunagirinathar ruthlessly exposes the dark underbelly of the “lust industry,” describing it as a world of “Neeli Nadakam” (Deceitful Drama), love potions, fake tears, alcohol, and greedy mothers who chase away penniless lovers. To escape this “Walking Illusion,” he meditates on the glorious lineage of Murugan. He praises Ganesha (who wrote the Mahabharata on Mount Meru), Vishnu (who tore open the demon Hiranyakashipu as a Lion), and Shiva (the Crown of the Vedas). He prays to the Lord of Tiruchendur, whose chest is marked not by the embrace of harlots, but by the saffron of the pure devotee Valli.
