The Essence of Thiruppugazh 89 mAnpOlkaN (thiruchchendhUr)
This song serves as a “Comparative Taste Test.” Arunagirinathar compares the artificial, cloying sweetness of worldly lust—which costs money and peace—with the genuine, liberating sweetness of Murugan’s grace, which is described as sweeter than honey, milk, and sugar.
1. The Deer-Eyed Deception
Arunagirinathar begins by describing the visual allure of women who entrap the senses. He mentions “Man Pol Kan”—eyes that are innocent and startled like those of a deer. They sing songs (Pan Padu) that are captivating. However, the poet warns that this beauty is a facade. He describes their physical form (Mulai) using the metaphor of “Pon Kodu” (Golden Tusks or Golden Hills) and “Seppu” (Chests/Caskets). The poet suggests that the mind gets locked into these “containers” of flesh, mistaking them for valuable gold.
2. The Sugarcane Juice of Lies
The poet analyzes the speech patterns used in seduction. He describes the words spoken by these women as “Vanjar Sen Charu”—the Red Juice of Sugarcane that is full of “Vanjam” (Deceit). These words are spoken with “Vanja” (Affection/Desire) but are essentially “Sanketham” (Codes/Signals) designed to entrap. The poet highlights that while the juice (words) tastes sweet, the intent behind it is to create a “Neenga” (Inescapable) mental picture (Sithiram) that haunts the devotee’s mind.
3. The Transaction of the Flower Bed
Arunagirinathar moves to the setting of the encounter. He describes the “Pungar” (Flower Gardens) and the “Kongu Aru Meththai” (The bed filled with pollen/fragrance). In this romantic setting, the man acts as the “Engu Ar Pangan” (The partner who yearns/pines). However, the poet brutally exposes the reality: this intimacy happens only when “Pon Charu Por Pana Muthal Neetha”—when the man parts with his gold, wealth, and capital. The “Flower Bed” is revealed to be a marketplace.
4. The Fools of False Love
The poet concludes the first half with a rhetorical question. He describes how these women speak “Anbu Atren Pola”—as if they are overflowing with love like a river of honey. But in reality, their love is strictly “Kantroram” (calculated/measured by the wealth given). Arunagirinathar calls them “Mattigal” (Fools/Dull-witted ones) and asks, “Uravu Amo?”—”Is it proper for a spiritual seeker to have a relationship with such people?” He rejects this false association.
5. The Terror of the Asura Lord
The song shifts to the battlefield. Arunagirinathar introduces “Asuresan”—The Lord of Asuras (Surapadman). This demon had the arrogance to gaze lustfully (Kan Parvai) even at the divine “Por Giri” (Golden Mountain/Meru) or the divine feminine. He caused the Devas to suffer. Murugan is introduced here as the warrior who confronted this massive ego, shattering the Asura’s power.
6. The Nephew of the Sky-Touching Archer
Arunagirinathar establishes Murugan’s glorious lineage. He refers to Lord Vishnu as “Achuthan” (The Imperishable One). He describes Vishnu’s valor as the one who wields the “Vir Kanai” (Bow and Arrow) that touches the sky (Van Toykkum). This refers to Vishnu’s avatars (Rama/Krishna) where he destroyed evil. Murugan is addressed as “Marukone”—the Nephew of this supreme archer, inheriting the same protective valor.
7. The Son of Kali
The poet describes the sweetness of the Lord. He lists the sweetest substances known to man: “Theem Pal” (Sweet Milk), “Kumbu Aku” (Treacle/Syrup), “Sarkkarai” (Sugar), and “Sen Theral” (Red Honey). He says Murugan’s speech and grace are sweeter than all of these combined. He identifies Murugan as the “Puthalvone” (Son) of Kali (Parvati), the Goddess who grants grace (Arul) to those who have “finished” or renounced the world (Theerntharkku).
8. The Honey of Tiruchendur
The song concludes with the image of the Supreme Teacher. Murugan is described as the one who taught the “Mukkiya” (Important/Primal) truth to “Mandarkku” (To the Great Shiva who holds the Ganga/or to the wise ones). He taught the Pranava Mantra when Shiva sought wisdom. The poet visualizes Tiruchendur not just as a town, but as a hive where Murugan resides like “Then” (Honey), surrounded by bees (devotees).
-
Contrast: The “Honey” of the women’s words (Verse 4) was false and costly. The “Honey” of Tiruchendur (Verse 8) is true and liberating.
Summary
“Manpolkan” is a song of Discrimination. Arunagirinathar sharply contrasts the “Deceptive Sweetness” of lust with the “Divine Sweetness” of Grace. He warns that the “deer-eyed” women offer words that taste like sugarcane juice but are actually a trap to drain one’s wealth and gold. He asks why one should associate with such “fools” (Mattigal). Instead, he directs the mind to Murugan, the Nephew of Vishnu and Son of Kali. He describes Murugan as the ultimate sweetness—surpassing milk, sugar, and honey—who resides in Tiruchendur and teaches the Ultimate Truth to even the Gods. The song urges the soul to taste the Divine Honey rather than the poisonous sugarcane of lust.
