The Essence of Thiruppugazh 90 mugilAmenum (thiruchchendhUr)
This song is a study in “Visual Exhibitionism.” The word “Katti” (Showing/Displaying) is repeated twelve times in the first half. Arunagirinathar vividly describes how worldly temptation works: by “showing” hair, “showing” the forehead, “showing” the eyes, etc., to entrap the mind. In the second half, he contrasts this with what Murugan “shows”: He shows “Abhayam” (Protection) and “Piriyam” (Love).
1. The Exhibition of Clouds and Moons
Arunagirinathar begins by describing the calculated display of beauty used to ensnare the senses. He says the women “Alagam Katti”—display their hair, arranging it to look like “Mukil” (Dark Clouds). They “Nuthal Katti”—show off their foreheads, comparing them to the high and bright “Mathi” (Moon). The poet emphasizes that this is a performance; the features are deliberately presented to create an illusion of celestial beauty (clouds and moons) to mask the mortal reality.
2. The Trap of Nectar and Arrows
The seduction continues through speech and sight. The women “Nakaiyum Katti”—display a smile that looks like a budding flower (Mukizh). They “Mathuram Katti”—show sweetness in their speech, ensuring their words feel like oozing nectar (Amuthu Uru). Most dangerously, they “Vizhi Katti”—show their eyes, which act as “Kanai” (Arrows) to pierce the onlooker’s heart. Finally, they present their face as a blooming “Kamalam” (Lotus). The poet lists these as weapons in the arsenal of lust.
3. The Mountain and the Creeper
Arunagirinathar moves to the physical form. He describes the women showing their chests, comparing them to “Malai” (Mountains). He describes them showing their waists (Idai), comparing them to a thin “Kodi” (Creeper/Vine). This contrast—the heaviness of the mountain and the fragility of the vine—is a classic poetic device used to highlight physical allure. The poet sees this not as beauty, but as a “Display of Burden” that weighs down the spiritual aspirant.
4. The Mud of Infatuation
The poet concludes the list of displays by mentioning the “Valai” (Bangles) and the “Kadi Thadam” (Hips/Loins) adorned with gems (Mani Ser). He recognizes that this entire exhibition is a “Thozhil”—a trade or a professional skill intended to create “Mayal” (Infatuation/Lust). He asks a weary question: “Must I wallow in this ‘Setru’ (Mud/Mire) of lust, trapped by these ‘Mada Mathar’ (Ignorant/Seductive women) who relentlessly show off these features?”
5. The Son of the Fire-Eyed Shiva
The song shifts dramatically to the Divine. Arunagirinathar seeks a specific savior: the Son of Lord Shiva. He describes Shiva as the one who burnt “Mathan” (Manmatha/Cupid) to ashes. How? Not with a weapon, but merely “Nakaiyal”—with a laugh or a smile (and the opening of the third eye). By invoking Murugan as the son of the “Lust-Burner,” the poet implies that Murugan possesses the hereditary power to burn the lust described in the first half of the song.
6. The Unfailing Love for Valli
Arunagirinathar describes the only “Display” that matters: Murugan’s love for Valli. He mentions “Thana Mathu”—the woman of the heavy chest (Valli). Murugan is described as showing “Piriyam” (Deep Affection/Love) to her. Crucially, this love is described as “Nazhuva Vagai”—a grip that never slips or fails. While the women in the first half show body parts to trap men, Murugan shows steadfast love to liberate the soul.
7. The Display of “Don’t Fear” (Abhayam)
The poet recalls the war with Surapadman. The demon (Niruthan) came to the battlefield with arrogance (Agam Meviya). In response, Murugan did not show fear. Instead, He “Abhayam Katti”—He showed the “Fear Not” hand gesture to the suffering Devas. He stood firm, declared the “Murai” (Laws of Dharma/Justice), and faced the demon without retreating (Mariyamal). This “Showing of Protection” is the antidote to the “Showing of Lust.”
8. The Restoration of the White Elephant
The song concludes with the complete protection of Indra. Murugan is praised as the one who saved “Amaresan” (The King of Immortals/Indra) completely (Muzhuthum Kaththa). He restored Indra to his rightful place on the back of “Ayiravatham”—the celestial White Elephant. The poet surrenders to this Perumale (Great Lord) of Tiruchendur, who ensures that his devotees are lifted from the “Mud of Lust” (Verse 4) to the “Royal Elephant of Wisdom.”
Summary
“Mugilamenum” is a song of Visual Contrast. Arunagirinathar begins by listing the relentless “exhibitionism” of worldly lust, where women “show” (Katti) their cloud-like hair, moon-like foreheads, arrow-like eyes, and mountain-like chests to drag the soul into the “Mud of Infatuation.” To escape this visual trap, the poet turns to Murugan, the son of Shiva (who burnt Cupid with a smile). Unlike the women who show their bodies to entrap, Murugan “shows” His Abhaya Hastam (Hand of Protection) to save the Devas and “shows” His unfailing love to Valli. The poet prays to be lifted from the mire of lust and protected just as Indra was saved and restored to his white elephant.
