The Essence of Thiruppugazh 53 kombanaiyAr (thiruchchendhUr)

This song is vibrant and dynamic. It moves from a description of the hypnotic beauty of women to the even more hypnotic, fierce dance of Goddess Kali. It concludes with the Mother blessing her Son (Murugan) to go forth and conquer the demons.

1. The Eyes that Clash with Earrings

Arunagirinathar begins by describing the captivating beauty of women, comparing them to slender creepers (Kombanaiyar). He focuses on their eyes, which are so long and wide that they seem to extend all the way to the ears, clashing with their earrings (Kadhu Modhi). These eyes are described as “Amodha” (Joyous/Fragrant) and cool (Seethala). The poet warns the mind not to be mesmerized by these eyes that seem to actively compete with the jewelry for attention, creating a visual trap for the observer.

2. The Fragrant Trap of the Hair Bun

The poet continues to describe the artificial enhancements of beauty. He mentions the chest adorned with Kungumam (Saffron/Vermilion) and Padeeram (Sandalwood paste), creating a heavy fragrance. He describes the hair bun (Kondai) which is decorated with “Sengazhuneer” (Red Water Lilies) that grow in water tanks (Neeravi). This combination of “Adhara Sobai” (Supportive/Artificial luster) is designed to delude (Marul) the mind. Arunagirinathar prays not to get confused by this decorated exterior.

3. The Shift from Lust to Liturgy

Arunagirinathar seeks to replace his obsession with women (Ondodi Mogam) with an obsession for God. He chants “Namo Nama” (Salutations again and again).

  1. Umbargal Swami: Master of the Devas.
  2. Emperuman: My Lord. He wants to stop saying words of praise to women and instead constantly chant these holy titles of Murugan. He realizes that the mouth used for flattering the mortal body should be used for praising the Immortal Lord.

4. The Plea Against Wasted Days

The poet expresses a deep regret for wasting time. He uses the phrase “Veen Naal Padathu” (Let not the days pass in vain). He outlines a new daily routine: singing the Lord’s fame (Un Pugazhe Padi) and performing “Achara Pujai” (Worship with proper discipline and rituals) with “Anbu” (Love). He asks for the grace to live a purposeful life (Uyinthida), shifting from a life of sensory waste to a life of spiritual productivity.

5. The Spinning Dance of Kali

The song shifts dramatically in the second half to a terrifying and majestic description of the Divine Mother. Arunagirinathar describes her as “Pambaram Pola Aadiya”—She who danced like a spinning top. She is Sankari (Consort of Shiva), Vedhala Nayaki (Leader of the Ghouls/Vetalas), and Karasuli (The one holding the Trident). This imagery of the Mother spinning furiously in the battlefield or cremation ground signifies the dynamic cosmic energy (Shakti) that powers the universe.

6. The Mother’s War Cry

The poet lists the fierce names of the Mother: Neeli (Blue Goddess), Modi (The Enchantress), Payankari (The Terrifying One), Maha Kali, and Yogini. This fierce Mother looks at the battle between Murugan and the demon Surapadman (Surapana Suran). Upon seeing her son ready for war, she blesses him saying, “Vazhi Vazhiye” (Long Live! Long Live!). She is the one who hands him the “Veerana Vel” (The Victorious Spear) to destroy the demons.

7. The Beautiful One of Vayalur

Arunagirinathar addresses Murugan as “Endrum Ulane” (The Eternal One) and “Manohara” (The Stealer of Hearts/Beautiful One). Interestingly, while singing at Tiruchendur, he invokes the Lord of Vayalur (Vayalura). This is because Vayalur is where Arunagirinathar received his initiation to sing. He credits the Lord of Vayalur for the grace he receives at Tiruchendur. He calls Murugan “In Sol Visaka”—The Lord Visakha who speaks sweet words.

8. The Salvation at Senthil

The song concludes with a prayer for “Eedetram” (Salvation/Upliftment). The poet addresses the Lord as Kripakara (Ocean of Mercy) who resides in Senthil (Tiruchendur) as the very “Life” (Vazhvu) of the town. He asks for the grace to be “saved” (Eedera). The journey of the song is complete: starting from the danger of the “creeper-like women,” moving through the protection of the “spinning-top Mother,” and finally finding safety at the feet of the “Sweet-speaking Son” at Tiruchendur.

Summary

“Kombanaiyar” is a song of Transformation and Blessing. Arunagirinathar prays to be released from the mesmerizing “decoration” of worldly women (saffron, sandalwood, and flowers) so he can stop wasting his days. He desires to replace lust with disciplined worship (Achara Pujai). The song features a spectacular vision of Goddess Kali spinning like a top (Pambaram), blessing her son Murugan to go forth and destroy evil. The poet ultimately seeks salvation at the feet of this victorious Son, the Lord of Tiruchendur and Vayalur.
