The Essence of Thiruppugazh 609 Soodhu Kolaikaarar (Gnaanamalai)

This Thiruppugazh song, “Soodhu Kolaigaarar,” composed at the sacred site of Gnanamalai, is a powerful warning against toxic associations. Saint Arunagirinathar describes the characteristics of deceitful people and prays to Lord Muruga to rescue him from such company, invoking the Lord’s victory over the Asuras.

1. The Characteristics of the Deceitful

The song begins with a harsh critique of people who live by gambling (Soodhu), violence (Kolaigaarar), and an insatiable greed for money. The poet describes them as being impure in thought and deed (Thouvaiyargal). Their faces are described as “blue” or darkened (Muganeelar), reflecting the inner gloom and lack of spiritual light caused by their sinful lives.

2. A Life Burdened by Disease and Sin

Arunagirinathar observes that those who lead lives of vice often suffer from agonizing physical ailments like colic pain (Soolai Vali) and arthritis (Vatham). He views these as physical manifestations of their “Paavam” (sins). He calls them “Kolar” (slanderers/backbiters) who spend their time gossiping and causing disharmony in the streets.

3. Empty Boasts and Petty Transactions

The poet describes the social behavior of these individuals. They stand in public places boasting about their fake achievements and “victories” (Saadhanaigal). They waste their lives in petty arguments, haggling over the price of a small measure of grain (Nazhi Thaazhi Vilai). Their talk is loud and proud, but it lacks any substance or truth.

4. Friendship as Fleet as Dust

The poet uses a beautiful metaphor: “Maya Thooli Uravu” (a relationship as transient as a dust storm). Just as dust rises in a swirl and vanishes, the friendship of the wicked is temporary and based on illusion (Maya). He asks a rhetorical question: “Is it right for me to have an intimate relationship with such deceitful people who are only pretending to be friends?”

5. The Cry of the Oppressed

The song shifts from the human world to the divine intervention of Muruga. He recalls how the Asuras (demons) tormented the righteous—Vedic sages, innocent children, women, and priests. Their cries for help reached the heavens as a “Poosal” (loud lament/complaint), prompting Muruga to take up arms to restore justice.

6. The Spear that Dried the Oceans

Muruga is praised as the warrior who released His powerful Spear (Vel). When the Asuras hid beneath the sea, the heat and power of the Vel were so intense that the seven oceans were reduced to mere slush or mud (Velai Alaraaga). The Vel annihilated the pride and the physical presence of the demon clan, proving Muruga’s status as the Ultimate Protector.

7. The Son of Goddess Abhirami

Muruga is addressed as the beloved son of Goddess Parvati, who resides on the left side of Lord Shiva (Naadharidam Mevu Maadhu). The poet uses beautiful names for the Mother: Sivagami (She who brings joy to Shiva), Naari (The Supreme Woman), and Abhirami (The Beautiful One). This highlights Muruga as the heir to divine grace and power.

8. The Lord of Gnanamalai and Valli

The song concludes at Gnanamalai, a hilltop shrine near Vellore. Muruga is seen here with Valli, who is described as the daughter of Lord Narayana (Vishnu). In her previous birth, Valli was born from Vishnu’s eyes as Sundaravalli. The poet surrenders to Muruga, the Perumal of the Mountain of Wisdom (Gnanamalai), asking for liberation from the influence of the wicked.

Summary

In this hymn, Arunagirinathar expresses his disdain for the company of gamblers, liars, and greedy individuals whose lives are plagued by disease and spiritual darkness. He compares their friendship to a fleeting dust storm. He seeks refuge in Lord Muruga, the son of Abhirami, who saved the sages and children by drying up the seven seas with His Vel to destroy the Asuras. He prays to the Lord of Gnanamalai, who stands with Valli, to protect him from the clutches of worldly deceivers.
