The Essence of Thiruppugazh 705 Eru Aanale (Kodanagar)

This song is a masterpiece of rhythmic poetry. It is structured entirely in two-syllable rhyming words (Era, Eya, Mara, Vara, Seera, Theva, Vera, Vetha). It creates a cascading musical effect while conveying the intense emotion of the soul longing for God (Nayaki-Nayaka Bhava).

The Scorching Heat of Separation

The song opens with the devotee (the soul) expressing the intense pain of separation from God. The phrase “ERA nAlE” refers to the rising sun or the progression of the day. For a lonely soul, the day feels scorching and unbearable, turning the body to ash (neeRAy). The poet complains about Manmatha (Cupid/Vele), who shoots his fragrant flower arrows (vAsak kaNai) at the suffering lover. In spiritual terms, this represents how the beauty of the external world torments the soul that craves only the internal beauty of God.

The Torture of Melodious Sounds

Arunagirinathar describes the psychological state where things that are usually pleasant become painful. He speaks of the bamboo flute (vEyA) and the melody produced through its holes (thoLaiyAlE). The “Seven Musical Notes” (Ezhu Osai) usually bring joy, but to the separated lover, they sound like a taunt. The music of the world feels hollow and piercing when the “Music of the Soul” (God) is absent. The soul feels disconnected and sees illusion (mAyA) everywhere.

The Fading Deer

The poet pleads with the Lord not to abandon him. He compares his soul to a “Vada Man”—a fading or withering deer. The mind is constantly changing (mARA), oozing with sorrow (URA), and ending in confusion (mAlAy). He asks the Lord, “Do not discard or neglect this fragile deer that is suffering in the forest of worldly life.” It is a cry for validation and protection against the changing tides of karma.

The Request for the Kadamba Garland

This is the central prayer of the song. The devotee challenges the Lord: “Come! Look at me! Join with me!” (vArAy pArAy sErAy). But he adds a condition: “If You cannot unite with me fully right now (Anal), at least send me Your Neepa Thodai.” The “Neepa” (Kadamba) garland is Murugan’s signature symbol of grace. The devotee asks for this unfading garland as a token of promise that he belongs to the Lord, even if the final union is delayed.

The Hero of the Fourteen Worlds

The tone shifts from the devotee’s sorrow to the Lord’s glory. Arunagirinathar addresses Murugan as “SeeRA VeerA”—the Fierce Hero. He describes Murugan’s fame as surrounding and encompassing the “Eer-Ezh Par” (The Fourteen Worlds/Planets). The Lord is depicted as the Kumaresa (Young Lord) who rides the beautiful, majestic peacock (seerAr thOkaik). This contrast reassures the devotee that the one he is calling out to is the Master of the entire universe.

The Deathless, Ageless Lord

The poet defines the eternal nature of the Divine. He calls Murugan “ThEvA” (God), “sAvA” (Deathless), and “mUvA” (Ageless). In a world where everything decays (as described in the first verse), Murugan alone remains constant. He is addressed as the “Natha” (Lord) of Kodaynagar, a shrine described as “Theera”—endless or possessing unfading glory. This establishes the temple as a gateway to immortality.

The Uprooting of the Great Demon

Arunagirinathar praises the martial prowess of Murugan. He describes the battle against Surapadman (Maa Sur). This demon was “Vera” (hostile) and “Mara” (unchanging in his enmity). The poet describes how Murugan fought until the very “root” of the demon was destroyed (Ver poy veezha). This signifies that Murugan does not just cut off the surface-level problems (sins) but uproots the very source of ignorance (Avidya) and ego.

The Essence of the Vedas

The song concludes with a rhythmic chant of the Lord’s titles. He is “VethA” (The essence of the Vedas), “PothA” (The embodiment of Bodha/Wisdom), “VelA” (The Wielder of the Spear), and “BAlA” (The Divine Child). The final salutation is “Veera Veerap Perumale”—The Hero of Heroes, the Great Lord. This creates a powerful, mantric finish to the song, affirming Murugan as the source of all knowledge, power, and grace.

Summary

Thiruppugazh 705 is a rhythmic cry of Divine Longing.

Arunagirinathar adopts the persona of a lover separated from her beloved. He describes how the rising sun, the flower arrows of Cupid, and the sound of the flute torment his soul, which is withering like a fading deer. He begs the Lord to come, look at him, and grant the Kadamba Garland as a sign of grace.

The song then transitions into a majestic praise of Lord Murugan of Kodaynagar. He is celebrated as the Deathless and Ageless Hero who uprooted the demon Surapadman and stands as the ultimate essence of the Vedas. The song ends by identifying Him as the Supreme Hero (“Veera”) who alone can save the suffering soul.
