The Essence of Thiruppugazh 726 Piraviyaana jadam (Siruvai)

This song is historically significant because it contains the Sthala Purana (local legend) of Siruvapuri, linking the temple to the Ramayana and the sons of Lord Rama. It is a prayer moving from the weariness of birth to the specific history of the “City of Children” (Siru-vai).

1. The Inert Vessel of Sorrow

The song begins with a heavy reflection on the nature of human existence. Arunagirinathar describes the body as “PiRaviyAna Jadam”—born as inert matter. The soul is trapped in this heavy, physical vessel that drags it down. He describes the life journey as descending into “pathless ways” (vazhi ilAdha thuRai) and getting lost. He laments that he is suffering from diseases (PiNi) and sorrows that make him stagger and lose his balance (ThadumaRi) in the ocean of life.

2. The Slippery Nature of Birth

The poet continues to describe the exhausting cycle of Samsara. Driven by accumulating “scorching karma” (theeya vinai), the soul wanders through various realms and states of existence (gathigaL thORu). Arunagirinathar uses the phrase “Pidi padAdha janana nambi”—trusting in a life that cannot be grasped. Just as one tries to hold water in a clenched fist, the devotee tries to hold onto this transient life, only to see it slip away, leading to eventual ruin (azhiyAdhE).

3. The Unfading Flower of Silence

To escape this slippery cycle, the poet seeks a stable anchor. He describes the Lord’s Holy Feet as “NaRai vizhAdha malar”—a Flower that never loses its fragrance or honey (unlike earthly flowers that wither). He praises these feet for opening the “Ariya Mona Vazhi”—the rare and difficult Path of Silence (Mauna). His prayer is simple yet profound: “Let those Lotus Feet never leave my mind (Enadhu chinthai agalAdhE).” He seeks a state of constant remembrance to counter the constant wandering.

4. The Ambition to be a Servant

Arunagirinathar expresses his highest ambition: not to be a king, but to be recognized as a true devotee. He notes that both humans (Narar) and the Lords of Devas (Suradhipar) desire to perform sweet service (Iniya Sevai) to Murugan. The poet asks, “When will I attain the status of being called a ‘Good Servant’ (Nalan adiyan?)” He realizes that true dignity lies not in worldly titles but in the servitude of the Divine.

5. Grace Without Enmity

The song shifts to the nature of Murugan’s warfare. The poet mentions the Sages (Munivar) who, despite controlling their senses (PoRi vazhAdha), suffered in caves due to the demons. Murugan sought out the demon Surapadman not out of hatred, but out of a sense of duty to release these sages. The phrase “Poruv ilAmal” is significant—it means “without match” or “without enmity.” Murugan fought the demon to grant him grace, transforming him into a peacock, rather than simply destroying him in anger.

6. The Goosebumps of Tamil Poetry

Arunagirinathar describes the arrival of the Lord. Murugan comes riding the peacock in a split second (Nodiyil vandhu). The poet describes the Lord as “wearing” Tamil poetry that causes “Pulagam” (horripilation or goosebumps). This suggests that Murugan is so moved by beautiful Tamil verse that He physically reacts with joy. It portrays God as an aesthetic being who delights in the literary devotion of His bhaktas.

7. The Battle of the Two Boys (Ramayana Legend)

This verse contains the specific legend of Siruvapuri. The poet refers to “Siruvar Agi Iruvar”—two young boys (Lava and Kusha, the sons of Rama). According to local legend, this town is where Lava and Kusha fought against the army of their father, Rama (Silai Raman – Rama with the Bow), including the elephant forces (Kari), unaware of their relationship. They fought a great battle (Samar Adi) and emerged victorious. The name Siru-vai (Children’s Place/City) is derived from this legend of the “Children” waging war.

8. The City of Victory

The song concludes by praising the town. Since the young boys won the battle here, it is called the “Jeyam AdhAna Nagar”—The City of Victory. Arunagirinathar compares its prosperity to Alakapuri (the City of Kubera, the God of Wealth). He addresses Murugan as the Perumale who resides in this prosperous, historical town of Siruvai, asking the Lord to grant him the same victory over his senses that the children won over the army.

Summary

Thiruppugazh 726 is a blend of Philosophy and Legend.

Arunagirinathar begins by lamenting the heavy burden of the “inert body” and the slippery nature of life, which cannot be grasped. He seeks the “Unfading Flower” of Murugan’s feet and the “Path of Silence” to escape this suffering.

He then connects the deity to the specific history of Siruvapuri, retelling the Ramayana legend where Lava and Kusha (the two sons of Rama) fought a victorious battle against their father’s army in this location. He praises Murugan as the Lover of Tamil and the Graceful Warrior, asking the Lord of this “City of Victory” to accept him as a true servant.
