The Essence of Thiruppugazh 744 palapala thaththuvam (thiruveNNeynhalluur)

This song is a masterpiece of Kundalini Yoga and Saiva History. The first half is a technical manual on how to transform the physical body into a body of light through breath control, while the second half celebrates the historical triumph of Saint Sambandar (an avatar of Murugan) and the devotion of Chandikeswarar.

1. Burning the Principles (Tattvas)

The song begins with the intense process of Jnana Yoga. Arunagirinathar speaks of the “Palapala Thaththuvam”—the 96 constituent principles (Tattvas) that make up the human body and mind. He expresses the desire to “burn” these limitations. He uses the metaphor of the “Vadava Anal”—the submarine fire that consumes the ocean. He wants the fire of wisdom to consume the ocean of ignorance/matter so that he can enter the “Peru Veli”—the Great Cosmic Void or the Space of Pure Consciousness.

2. The Path of the Sun (Sushumna Nadi)

The poet describes the specific technique of breath control (Pranayama). He speaks of stopping the “Pavanam” (Air/Breath) from flowing through the usual two channels (Ida and Pingala). Instead, he wants to open the “Oru Paruthi Vazhi”—the Single Path of the Sun. In Yoga, this refers to the Sushumna Nadi, the central channel. When the life force travels this path, the yogi transcends the body and realizes “Siva Mayam”—that the entire universe is nothing but Shiva.

3. The Golden Hall of the Heart

Arunagirinathar describes the sensory experience of this high state. When the Kundalini rises, he hears the “Kala Kala” sound of the Divine Anklets (Kazhal Paripura). He envisions the “Kanaka Sabhai”—the Golden Hall of Chidambaram—not just as a physical place, but as the space within his own heart. He describes the experience as “melting” (Urugi) and drowning in a “Cool Ocean” (Niraikkadal) of bliss. This contrasts with the “fire” mentioned in the first verse; the process is fiery, but the result is cool bliss.

4. The Body of Living Fire

The poet prays for a transfiguration of the physical body. He asks for a state where he is united with Gauri (Shiva’s consort) and Aran (Shiva). He wants to attain “Anaka Sagathuvam”—a sinless, natural state of oneness. The most striking image is his request for his body to become “Kazhi Anal Akkini Niram”—to glow with the color of a blazing fire or molten gold. He seeks the Divya Sarira (Divine Body) that knows no decay.

5. The Child-Poet who Conquered the Jains

The song shifts from internal yoga to external history. Arunagirinathar praises Murugan as the one who incarnated as Thirugnana Sambandar. He references the debate in Madurai where Sambandar defeated the Amanar (Jains) who were persecuting Saivites. The line “Kazhukkalil Uravidu” refers to the historical event where the defeated Jains were impaled on stakes (according to legend, a punishment they wagered upon themselves). Murugan is hailed here as the “Chithira Pulavan”—the Wonderful Poet who used Tamil verses (Viruthu) as his weapon.

6. The Drama of the Old Man and Valli

The poet recalls Murugan’s “Leela” (Divine Play) in the millet fields (Puna Malai). He describes how the Lord disguised Himself as a “Kizhavan” (Old Man) to test the love of the Hunter Girl, Valli. He mentions the specific scene at the mountain spring (Sunai) where He frightened her (with an elephant) and then embraced her, causing goosebumps (Pulakitha) on her shoulders. The contrast is sharp: the Yogi of the first verse is the romantic Lover of this verse.

7. The Son of the Axe-Wielder (Chandikeswarar)

This is a complex mythological reference. The poet mentions “Kumari Thappanai Mazhu Kodu Vettiya.” This refers to Chandikeswarar, a young devotee who cut off his own father’s legs with an axe (Mazhu) when the father disturbed his Shiva Puja.

Shiva and Parvati were so pleased by his devotion that they appeared and made him the head of the Ganas. Parvati (Nimalikai) accepted him as her son. Arunagirinathar praises Murugan as the biological son of that same Mother who adopted the fierce devotee Chandikeswarar.

8. The Peacock Dance of Thiruvennainallur

The song concludes at Thiruvennainallur. This town is famous for being the place where Lord Shiva intervened to claim Saint Sundarar as his slave. Arunagirinathar describes the town as being surrounded by groves (Pozhil) where clouds rest. He visualizes Murugan dancing on the “Arputha Mayil” (Miraculous Peacock) in this holy town, asking the Lord to grant the fiery, golden body mentioned earlier.

Summary

Thiruppugazh 744 is a journey from Breath Control to Divine Grace.

Arunagirinathar begins with high Yoga, describing the process of burning the 96 Tattvas, controlling the breath to open the central channel (Sushumna), and transforming the physical body into a “Body of Fire” that glows like gold.

He then connects this internal power to the external power of Murugan, identifying Him as the Poet-Saint Sambandar who re-established Saivism in Madurai, and as the Old Man who wooed Valli. He invokes the grace of the Mother who blessed Chandikeswarar, asking the Lord of Thiruvennainallur to grant him the ultimate state of “Sinless Oneness.”
