The Essence of Thiruppugazh 79 paruththandha (thiruchchendhUr)

This song follows the classic Arunagirinathar structure: the first half deals with the entrapment of the senses and the plea for creativity, while the second half glorifies Murugan’s authority over the Creator (Brahma) and the Destroyer (Surapadman).

1. The Mountain of Illusion

Arunagirinathar begins by describing the physical allure that captivates the human mind. He uses the words “Paruthu Andha” (Large and Beautiful) to describe the chest of women (Thanam). He compares their form to a “Por Prabai Kundru”—a Golden, Radiant Hill. The poet suggests that the human soul gets crushed under the weight of this “fleshly mountain.” The visual brilliance of the physical form acts as a blinding light, preventing the soul from seeing the true light of God.

2. The Lethal Weapon of the Eyes

The poet describes the dangerous power of a woman’s glance. He compares her eyes to a “Sakkaram” (Chakra/Discus weapon) and “Saththi” (Spear/Power). He says these eyes are capable of “Parikkum”—snatching away or robbing a man of his wisdom and character. The glance is not passive; it is an active weapon that cuts through a man’s defenses, leaving him vulnerable and stripped of his spiritual merit.

3. The Severing of the Intellect

Arunagirinathar confesses his own weakness. He admits to being entrapped by the “Chen Kadai” (The Red Corner) of the eyes. This infatuation creates a “Peruththa Anbu”—a massive, swollen, false attachment. The result of this attachment is “Thunikkum Buddhi”—the severing or amputation of the Intellect. When lust increases, the discriminating intelligence is cut off. The poet laments that he has become “Ariyen”—an ignorant one who has lost the path of truth due to this fascination.

4. The Request for the Gift of Tamil

Realizing his intellect has been severed by lust, the poet asks for a divine replacement. He prays for the “Thunai Sem Pon Patham”—the Support of the Golden Feet. He asks Murugan to accept him and “Rule over him” (Padi Aaalvay). The specific method of this rule is interesting: he asks the Lord to give him “Sol Tamil” (The Gift of Tamil Words). He wants to replace the “words of lust” with the “garland of Tamil verse,” seeking creativity as the cure for carnal desire.

5. The Terror of the Celestial Spheres

The song shifts to the cosmic history of the Surasamharam war. Arunagirinathar describes the demon Surapadman as one who terrified the “Andam” (The Universe/Spheres). Surapadman gave “Thadath Thunbam” (Massive Sorrow) to the Devas. He was an “Audacious Demon” (Ethir Suran) who challenged the cosmic order, much like how lust challenges the moral order within the human mind.

6. The Ray that Ended the War

The poet describes the climax of the battle. Murugan released His “Kathir” (Ray/Light/Vel). This weapon caused Surapadman to faint and fall to the ground (Padi Thunja). By destroying the demon, Murugan showed “Anbu” (Love) to the “Umbar Pathi” (The City of Devas / Amaravathi). This illustrates Murugan’s dual nature: He is a terror to the wicked (Suran) but a loving guardian to the righteous (Devas).

7. The Punishment of the Creator

Arunagirinathar references a favorite episode: the punishment of Brahma. He refers to Brahma as “Thiru Kanjan” (The Divine Lotus-Born). Because Brahma did not know the meaning of the Pranava Mantra (“Om”), Murugan punished him—“Kandithu” (Censured) and “Kuttivittu” (Knocked him on the head/Imprisoned him). Following this, Murugan became the Guru and taught the “Porul” (The Ultimate Meaning) to Lord Shiva (Sivakku). This verse asserts Murugan’s supreme wisdom, exceeding even that of the Creator.

8. The Charitable Lord of Victory

The song concludes with a glorification of Tiruchendur. The temple is described as a place of “Jayam” (Victory) and “Kodai” (Charity/Generosity). Murugan is the Lord who wears the “Thiruth Thangiyathar” (The bearer of Wealth/Lakshmi/Grace). He is the Perumale (Great One) residing in the golden city of Chendur. The poet ultimately finds his refuge not in the “Golden Hill” of the woman’s chest (Verse 1), but in the “Golden City” of the Lord (Verse 8).

Summary

“Paruththantha” is a song of Transformation from Lust to Literature. Arunagirinathar begins by describing how the “Golden Hill” of a woman’s body and her “Weapon-like Eyes” sever the intellect and rob a man of his wisdom. To repair this severed intellect, he prays for the “Support of the Golden Feet” and the “Gift of Tamil Poetry.” The song then praises Murugan’s authority, describing how He destroyed the terrifying demon Surapadman to save the Devas and how He punished Brahma for ignorance while teaching the Supreme Truth to Lord Shiva. The poet seeks to be ruled by this Victorious and Charitable Lord of Tiruchendur.
