The Essence of Thiruppugazh 790 Eezhai Surangulir (Paagai)
This song is a stark juxtaposition of the decay of the human body versus the vitality of nature. The first half is a graphic, medical description of mortality, while the second half is a lush, energetic description of the fertility of the temple town. It represents the soul’s desire to move from the rotting body to the evergreen state of Siva Yoga.
The Siege of Sickness
The song begins with a medical listing of the afflictions that plague the human body. Arunagirinathar mentions “Eelai” (phlegm/asthma), “Suram” (fever), “Kulir” (chills), and “Vadham” (rheumatism/wind imbalance). He describes these diseases not merely as existing, but as encircling or besieging the body (Valaindhu Ara). The poet expresses a deep fear of withering away (Ilaiyadhe) under the constant assault of these physical ailments, highlighting the fragility of human health.
The Body as a Temporary Nest
Arunagirinathar uses a poignant metaphor, calling the body a “Siru Kudu”—a small nest or cage. It is fragile, easily destroyed, and temporary. He laments the destiny of this nest: to eventually enter the “Kadu” (the forest, specifically the cremation ground). The poet pleads that he does not want to live a life where he merely occupies this decaying cage only to lose his life (Uyir Izhavadhe) in the graveyard without having achieved any spiritual purpose.
The Fire that Consumes the Anatomy
The imagery becomes visceral and graphic. The poet visualizes the moment of cremation. He lists the biological components of the body: the brain (Mulai), bones (Elumbugal), nerves, and blood vessels (Nadi Narambugal). He describes the horror of these parts separating and disintegrating as they are immersed in the cremation fire (Thazhal Muzhugadhe). This serves as a “Memento Mori”—a reminder of death—to shock the mind out of its attachment to the physical form.
The Request for Siva Yoga
Having established the futility of the physical body, the poet asks for the only cure. He prays for the “Moola Siva Yoga Padham.” This refers to the state of union with Shiva, rooted in the eternal Source (Moolam). He asks Lord Murugan to “speak” (Mozhivaye)—meaning to give the Upadesa (spiritual instruction)—that will allow him to attain this state of deathless existence. He wants to shift his identity from the burning body to the eternal spirit.
The Rebellion of the Fish
The song shifts abruptly from the cremation ground to the vibrant temple tanks of Pagai. The poet describes the abundance of life here. The tanks are crowded with Valai fish. However, the Kayal and Sel fish (carp) are so strong and energetic that they overturn and tear through the fishermen’s nets (Valai Peera). This symbolizes the irrepressible force of life and nature in the Lord’s abode, contrasting with the weak, diseased human body described earlier.
Touching the Young Moon
The energy of the fish is described with beautiful hyperbole. After breaking the nets, these fish jump so high that they crash into the Vagai trees and the fragrant Ketaki (screw pine) flowers on the banks. The poet says they leap with such force that they seem to touch the crescent moon (Ila Madhi Thoyum) in the sky. This imagery of “touching the moon” suggests that the environment of the temple connects the earth to the heavens.
The Fragrant Crash
The description of the fertile landscape continues. The leaping fish crash through the Puga Vanam—the groves of areca nut (betel) palms. The impact releases the sweet fragrance of the Palai (spathes) of the trees. Finally, these energetic fish leap into the backwaters of the ocean (Nedung Kadal). This chaotic, fragrant, and energetic scene emphasizes the “Valam” (fertility/wealth) of the town of Pagai.
The Beloved of the Peacock-Lady
In the final lines, Arunagirinathar addresses the Lord who resides in this fertile city of Pagai. He calls Him the “Great One” (Perumale) who is desired by the “Thogai.” “Thogai” literally means “the one with a plumage” (a peacock), but in poetry, it often refers to a woman (whose hair or grace resembles a peacock). Here, it likely refers to Valli or Deivayanai, highlighting that the Lord is the object of the soul’s supreme desire, just as He is the desire of His consorts.
Summary
Thiruppugazh 790 is a prayer for Immortality.
Arunagirinathar starts with a terrifying realization of mortality: the body is besieged by fever and rheumatism, it is a fragile nest destined for the graveyard, and its brains and bones will eventually be consumed by fire. He begs Lord Murugan to save him from this fate by teaching him the “Siva Yoga,” the path to the eternal Source.
The song then contrasts this dying body with the undying vitality of the temple town of Pagai. The poet paints a picture of fish so strong they tear nets, break trees, and jump to touch the moon. This vitality represents the life-giving power of the Divine. The poet concludes by asking the Lord of this fertile land to grant him the “Real Life” of spiritual union.
