The Essence of Thiruppugazh 83 perukkasanjaliththu (thiruchchendhUr)

This song is a journey from “Agitation” to “Authorization.” Arunagirinathar describes the chaotic, tearful state of a mind trapped in lust and contrasts it with the dignity of a mind authorized to sing the praise of God in pure Tamil.

1. The Agitation of a Life in Error

Arunagirinathar begins by describing the intense emotional turbulence caused by a life of sensory indulgence. He uses the phrase “Perukka Sanjalithu”—meaning “Greatly Agitated” or “Deeply Shaken.” He describes the state of the sinner as “Azhutru” (Weeping) and “Punthiyatru” (Senseless/Without Wisdom). The life lived in pursuit of “Pothu Mathar” (Public Women/Courtesans) is described as “Pizhaippatru”—a life grasped by error. The poet highlights that what feels like pleasure is actually a state of constant anxiety, foolishness, and eventual regret.

2. The Theatrical Trap of Affection

The poet exposes the artificial nature of hired love. He describes how these women “Priyappattu”pretend to show affection. They invite the man inside (Azhaithu) and into their privacy (Thangalaikkul). They bind him (Pinithu) with “Patcham” (Side/Affection/Partiality). Arunagirinathar prays specifically to avoid embracing their “Thanam” (Breasts). He recognizes that this affection is a performance designed to entrap the “senseless” mind mentioned in the first verse, leading only to spiritual bondage.

3. Flourishing through Tamil

Arunagirinathar seeks a replacement for his sensory cravings. Instead of the embrace of women, he asks for “Purakkai” (Protection/Refuge) at Murugan’s Holy Feet. He wants his senses (Pulam)—which are currently grasping at worldly pleasures—to instead “Sezhikka” (Flourish/Prosper) by singing “Senthamizh” (Pure/Beautiful Tamil). This is a profound concept: the senses are not to be killed, but redirected and nourished by the divine vibration of sacred poetry.

4. The Badge of the Poet Laureate

The poet asks for a specific spiritual status: “Pulappattam.” This refers to the “Title of Learning” or the “Badge of the Wise Poet.” He wants the grace to visualize the Lord constantly in his mind (Karuthil Kanpada). He asks for “Pugazhchi” (Fame/Praise)—not for his ego, but the fame that comes from being a true servant of God. He seeks the “Krupai Chitham” (Mind of Grace) that authorizes him to be a divine messenger, transforming him from a “weeping sinner” to a “celebrated poet.”

5. The Prostrating Lover of the Millet Field

The song shifts to the divine romance. Arunagirinathar describes Murugan’s behavior towards Valli (the Hunter Girl). Murugan, the Supreme Lord, went to the millet field (Thandu Punam), prostrated (Thandani Ittu) before her, and stood with his mind melting (Chitham Thalarvone) in love. He stood “Tharukki”—with a specific kind of pride or confidence in his love. This highlights the humility of God: The Lord who commands the universe is willing to bow down and faint for the love of a pure devotee.

6. The Destruction of Weary Confusion

Arunagirinathar describes the destruction of the demon Surapadman. The demon is described as one who caused “Salippu” (Weariness/Fatigue) and “Sampramam” (Confusion/Bewilderment) to the world. He caused the Devas to wander (Alaithu) in fear. Murugan engaged this “Author of Confusion” in “Samar” (Battle) and punished/destroyed him (Sankarikka). This parallels the first verse: just as Murugan destroyed the demon who caused confusion, He destroys the “Sanjalam” (Agitation) in the devotee’s mind.

7. Splitting the Mountain and the Body

The poet vividly describes the violence of grace. Murugan cut off the heads (Sirathai Aruthu) of the demon and sliced his body (Pan Thadithu), which had transformed into a mango tree. He also split the “Thin Kuvadu”—the strong/hard Krauncha Mountain. After this fierce battle, the Lord entered “Senthil” (Tiruchendur) to reside there. The “splitting” represents the breaking of the hard ego and the deep-seated karmic knots.

8. The Whisper in the Hall of Consciousness

The song concludes with Murugan’s supreme authority. Arunagirinathar refers to Lord Shiva as “Thiruchitrambalath Aththan”—The Father who dances in the Golden Hall of Consciousness (Chidambaram). Murugan is the one who whispered the “Panbu” (The Gracious Truth/Pranava Mantra) into the “Sevi” (Ear) of this Supreme Shiva.

  • The Contrast: In Verse 5, Murugan bows to the Hunter Girl Valli. In Verse 8, Murugan instructs the Supreme Lord Shiva. This encapsulates His nature: humble to the devotee, yet the Guru of the Gods.

Summary

“Perukkasanjaliththu” is a song of Redirection. Arunagirinathar begins by confessing his misery, describing how he is “greatly agitated” and weeping due to the trap of lust and the false affection of courtesans. He prays to be released from this “life of error.” He asks to replace the “embrace of women” with the “protection of the Holy Feet.” He seeks to nourish his senses not with lust, but with “Senthamizh” (Pure Tamil poetry), asking for the “Badge of Wisdom” (Pulappattam). The song glorifies Murugan as the one who humbly melted in love for Valli in the millet fields, yet fiercely split the mountain to destroy the demon Suran, and ultimately stands as the Supreme Guru who whispered the Pranava Mantra into the ear of Lord Shiva.
